So I was eating with someone the other day who know that I am raw and they offered me some "raw" cookies. They looked great! The problem came when I asked them what was in them (luckily before I took a bite) and they told me dates, pecans, flax, apple chucks, cinnamon, and splenda.
:backsout:
SPLENDA!!!! I told them I couldn't eat it because there was splenda in it (even if I was raw Splenda gives me a headache). They didn't understand. They said, "But your percentage is based on calories from food right? Splenda is zero calories so it shouldn't count!"
I was speechless. Has anyone ever heard any :duh comments like this before? If so, what was the comment? Please share!

This is exactly the type of thing that puzzles me when people talk about %age raw. My particular puzzlement comes when people say that the master cleanse is compatible with raw food guidelines. The majority of calories on the master cleanse comes from non-raw foods but people don't want to see that.
I don't think %age is really possible to work out. You certainly can't reckon on it in calorie terms and I don't think you can't count it it terms of volumes either!
Something is either raw or it isn't and whilst there are some things that are given the ok on a raw diet, it doesn't actually make them raw. I think it is more honest to oneself to say that there are some things (definitely not splenda!) that are admissible and to use those sparingly.

Well, it was very nice of them to make the effort and I hope you thanked them! I would have just said, "Oh wow that is soooooo nice of you but, unfortunately Splenda actually makes me sick!"

I was polite ... and I did appreciate the effort, I just don't understand why anyone would think that Splenda is raw! I heard a lot of, lets say uninformed, opinions when I was veg*n, but this is the first since being raw (other than the typical "What do you eat?!?!")

Maybe your friend got STEVIA and SPLENDA confused. I know when I first went raw and saw that some raw foodies used stevia I was a bit confused.

I don't understand why anyone would eat Splenda period. Horrible stuff.
The dates and apples in those cookies would have been plenty sweet for me.

Lack of education. Some people just don't know. They don't do research, have no clue, etc. etc. It was nice of them to attempt to make you raw cookies though, I wish I had friends like that. ;-)
