Hi everyone.

Ive been searching high and low for information on juice fasting for weight loss, and i have gathered alot of information and now i have come across this forum which i think is my last stop before i start my no food juice fast next week.

But nowhere says how much juice it is ok to drink a day for weight loss, so i believe in the first few weeks of a juice fast for weight loss 7lbs a week is very realistic before the weight loss slows down. But im worried that if you drink to much juice then i wont lose as much weight!

Is that how it works?

And how much juice is it safe to drink with those sort of weight loss goals in mind?

Also how much water should i drink a day?

If anyone could help me with those questions before i get started i would appreciate it, and i hope to support others as they support me when i begin this fast.

I recently juiced for 30 days and was drinking about 2 qts. of juice a day and a qt of water but juice feaster drink a gallon a day...you will most likely loose weight no matter how much juice you drink...during my fast there were days I drank less and felt I should have a minimum 2 qts so as not to go into starvation mode. Wishing you the best.

btw...I lost 29 lbs in 30 days...it slowed slightly as I went along but still continued...depends on how much you have to lose I think

I'm curious how long the weight loss lasts once one begins eating again. From my experience, when one does something specifically for weight elimination, once they change the program, they regain the weight. The loss doesn't come from a sustainable lifestyle therefore, the loss isn't sustainable.

Revvell, the assumption that you are making is that all fasters follow the same unsustainable protocol.....fast, lose, return to old paradigm, gain it back. Many do indeed have this experience.

There have been many successful stories of people using fasting as a way of dramatically changing their way of life....losing the weight, but then not returning to their former unhealthy lifestyle but instead incorporating daily consistent exercise, higher quality diet, etc. This is why the transitioning from the fast is so much harder and much more critical than the fast itself. A new lifestyle must be adopted. What do you think?

You're making the assumption that I'm talking about all fasters. I'm responding to THIS particular one who has not mentioned anything but "how fast can I lose the weight?" Nothing about how to sustain it; nothing about a lifestyle change.. nothing about adding movement... maybe he's doing that... *shrugs* I dunno yet, just from what I'm reading, which is all I'm going on, he's doing what so many do... go on some type of "diet" to lose, only to go looking for it as soon as he/they reach their weight loss goal. Not sustainable.

Oh Ok. You were simply making an assumption regarding the original poster.

I assumed incorrectly.

Hi Everyone

Thanks for you responses

As to your assumption Revvell, i am going to be walking or running every day and i am well aware before doing this that i will be kicking my body into a sort of starvation mode and that if i am successful losing the weight that is only half the battle. I know when i start eating i will have to do it very slowly (to retrain my digestive system) as my body to start off with will be storing fat something like 3 times as fast. And that if i go back to eating crisps, chocolate, cake and everything else that tastes good but makes you fat then i will just balloon back up again. So the second battle will be the lifestyle change(majorly involveing a healthy diet and continued exercise) But i do believe i can lose the weight and keep it off with juice fasting if i win both battles. I didn't mention this because im not at the second stage and i just wanted to know some information about the weight loss stage and thought i would discuss the second battle as i got into the juice fast. Also, i was just in it for the weight loss but as i have read more and more i realized there are so many other health benefits to juice fasting and for one i believe it could be really help my body and allow it to heal internally.

Thanks GlimR 29lb in 30 days sounds around about the ball park figure i was thinking, and i will work off your 2 quart suggestion for juice. as for the one quart water, wow. i thought i could drink 4-8 pints of water a day! Will it affect my weight loss if i drink 4-8 pints day(i want to exercise 1 hour a day)? Or would you suggest to try around the 1 quart of water if i want to lose weight? I have about 5 stone to lose.

And jhodi that is why im doing this because of all the success stories and reported health benefits out there. But thanks for reminding me that the harder part will be the end of the juice fast and the beginning of the new lifestyle. I know the hard works up to me, but im glad Ive found somewhere were lots of people understand how hard it is and can support each other.

Dave, I am currently on Day 7 of my juice fast and every day I am consumed with how I am going to transition and maintain whatever weight I lose. I started a thread on that very topic so perhaps you can meet me over there to share information and support each other. I am trying for a 30 day fast with a 30 day transition into a very high raw diet and establishing a very consistent daily exercise regime....PLUS....laying off the red wine when I get back into eating solid food, etc. I know clearly where my obstacles are....just still very nervous about making this a success. Nothing sucks worse than fasting and blowing it.

:-) Let';s do it!

Oh yeah, in regards to your original question: people I know drink 2-4 quarts a day plus as much water as they can drink comfortably....the monthly fasting thread is very helpful. Good luck!

You've got me worried about the transition now lol, but i cant wait to get started now. it will have to be this coming wednesday (Im not putting it off, Ive order a juicer online and i have to wait for it to come). Thanks for the info about the 2-4 quarts (that's useful). Glad i have found the first person im going to be able to chat about it with when i get started. Well done for getting through the first week jhodi.

Ps even though i mentioned that i knew the transition and maintenance was the hardest part. After reading more threads i think im underestimating it and im going to have to chat with people who've been through it and are going through it, as i do my juice fast so that im fully prepared at the end for the stage two battle.

Dave, I hope you listen to your body and drink how much juice you need instead of how much you think you should have. But I do understand you would like to know some kind of "ball park" that you can go by. Personally I juice fast a few times a year and have found out that there are days that I drink a lot of juice and days that I hardly drink any juice. You will release weight anyway if you have enough to release...
Eating in freedom by Tom Coghill might be a good read when you are fasting for the transition....

Hi Hanneke

Thanks for your reply. im getting the feeling from this thread and reading a few others that 2 quarts is a "ball park" figure but that i can drink more juice if i need it and still lose weight. I had been looking at the 4 book set by tom coghill for around $25, Thanks for the recommendation. Would you say all four are worth the investment? there called:

Fasting E-Book
Eating In Freedom E-Book
The Perfect Diet E-Book
Extreme Health Recipes E-Book

Anybody Else bought these?

Maybe "eating in freedom" will help someone like me whose second battle will be to let go of my love for chocolate, cake, biscuits and fried fatty things so that the rest of my life can be healthy.

If you haven't already bought Alissa's book Living on Live Food then you really should give it a go.

It's filled with amazing raw food and is perfect for a beginner in raw food but also those who've been around the block a few times too.

Check out the link top left of the forum under the lettuce.

Let me share my experience. I am on day 54 of a juice fast. I am 42 pounds down from where I was, and, I must say, one of my primary goals was weight loss. I was 229, and this morning 187. For a guy a just about 5'11", that's a lot better. My other reason for trying the fast was due to an auto-immune issue that related to dry, cracking and often painful hands and feet. Guess what? 90% symptom free! My hands look "human" again :) Clearer than I can remember them being in a LONG time and consistently so. "Nothing short of a miracle, Mate!", as Joe Cross would say.

As to where to go from here? Well, I will end this after 9 weeks, so I am almost there. I have decided to do another couple of months eating vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds and nuts. After that, I will expand the universe a bit, albeit carefully.

Here's the thing. This is the FIRST TIME that I have "dieted" and not dreamt about the hamburger or big steak I would have the moment I reach my goal. In fact, I am thinking about (and planning for) the healthy things I will be eating. For a guy who never met a pork chop he didn't like, that's pretty amazing!

What's different this time? I guess for me, it is the fact that my chronic symptoms have been responding to something that even the dermatologist's medicines could not fix, and I like that!

Wow, thats uncanny oraham! i am on day 3 of my fast and i'm struggling a bit but listen to this and why you've inspired me. No joke my starting weight is 228lb and my height must be around the same as yours. My fast goal is 2 months and i hope to lose around 3 stone(which you have on day 54) and then spend around 2 months training myself to eat again eating just vegetables, fruits, beans, seeds and nuts(same as you).

Also i was just in it for the weight loss, but once i realized what a simple juice fast can do for your body(as with your 90% symptom loss) i was sure i wanted to do it(hopefully my slight organ pains will disappear in a few months).

Congratulations on your weight loss and almost curing those issues you had. Your almost about to start the second battle of transitioning slowly to eating again for two months! Good luck :)

Seeing my goals and fast are practically the same as yours please could you answer a few question to put my mind at ease.

How much juice did you drink a day?
How Much Exercise have you been doing?
And around how much water would you say you drink a day?

Once again congratz and thanks for a weight loss success story that is so close to what trying to achieve(Very inspiring) :)

I don't really have a set amount. I travel a lot for work, and there is definitely a difference between when I am home and whenI am out of town.

At home, I will make juice to fill a bit more than the pitcher of my Breville juicer (1-1/3 to 1-1/2 pitchers). I am guessing that this can be 40 ounces (?). I will do this twice daily; so, somewhere between 60 and 80 ounces daily while at home.

When traveling, it is more difficult. I try to find a fresh juice place wherever I go, but their portions are not as generous and a lot more expensive. So, probably 30 or 40 ounces a day those days. When I can't find fresh juice, I have tried bottled carrot juice and a small amount of pure apple juice and pure cocoanut water. In a pinch, low sodium V-8, as I had to do in St. Louis, yesterday.

I am not currently exercising much, although I have been a bit more active. While on this juice fast, I have been whitewater rafting, spent the better part of a day going up and down a mountain and even gone skydiving!

On days at home, I don't drink much extra water, as I am having a lot of juice. On the road, I will drink 3 or 4 bottles of water a day (36 to 48 ounces).

As for what I juice (no, you didn't ask :) ), I am a frugal shopper. I buy what is on sale. I shop ethnic or independent markets, that I find have better prices on produce than the chain stores. So, if kale looks good and cheap, I buy it. If not, I buy something else. I try to keep the ratio of vegetables to fruit at 3 or 4 to 1. A typical juicing will be:

1 bunch cilantro or parsley (cost: $0.50)
3 large carrots (cost: $0.75 - I get them at anywhere from $0.50 to $0.75 per pound)
1 apple (cost: $0.25 - I buy them 6 for $1.50)
1 lime (cost: $0.10 - I buy them 10 for $1.00)
1/2 bunch spinach (cost: $0.85 - I buy it $1.70 per bunch)
1/2 bunch kale (cost: $0.65 - I buy it $1.30 per bunch)
1 clump of ginger (cost: $0.50 - I buy it $2.00 per pound)
1 bunch watercress (cost: $1.70)
4 celery stalks (cost: $0.40 - I buy it $1.70 per head)

Total Cost: $5.70

Other things that I have had in juice:

Tomatoes
Watermelon
Canaloupe Melon
Honeydew Melon
Musk Melon
Strawberries
Rasberries
Blueberries
Bok Choy
Dandelion Greens
Cucumber
Bitter Melon (Bitter Gourd)
Grapefruit
Lemon

Hope that helps and good luck!

Victor

Great, that confirms that with weight loss goals of what you have achieved i am doing it correctly.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. And i should of asked what juices you've been drinking! So thanks for the extra answer.

When you slowly transition to eating do you carry on drinking the same amount of juice while you slowly train yourself to eat?

I believe your meant to take the same amount of time as you fast to train yourself to eat. I would think in those two months you could possibly lose another stone eating raw, what do you think?

Thanks or the help again

Dave,

I won't be juicing like this while eating, although I am contemplating maybe setting aside one or two days a week exclusively for juice. Instead, I will be following a mostly raw diet, with the inclusion of some steamed beans. After a couple of months of that, I will see where it takes me; perhaps to including some broiled fish (never been a big seafood guy).

My intention is to ultimately stay dairy-free (although I may try goat's milk down the road), wheat-free and processed food-free. And I want too see whether I can stay away from beef, pork and even poultry.

In the past, a return to eating has meant a return to higher weight. I am pegging my hopes for success this time on two things:

1. This juice fast has been the first time that I have not been craving the "steak and potatoes" and bacon cheeseburger. Amazing!
2. Because my auto-immune condition is responding so well, I don't want to screw that up.

Now, I am sort of flying by the seat of my pants here, I really don't have any set plan, other than what makes sense to me. I am basing it somewhat off of some comments Joe Cross made to me about what he was eating after he finished his 60-day juice fast.

Later, Dave.
