Little bit of prologue: In the past I have been a HEAVY proponent of the Atkins diet, I've done it on several occasions and have been successful up until those last stubborn 10 pounds or so.

At one point I remember telling my old vegan boss, that I could never live her kinda lifestyle.

I've attributed pretty much all my positive gains in energy, and weight loss and complexion to the increased meat consumption and lack of 'toxic' grains, while somehow managing to overlook that fact that I was also eating more salad greens in a week than I used to eat in a year.

I started to turn the corner after reading, Green Leaves of Barley, by Dr. Mary Ruth Swope. In it she mentioned that heavy meat consumption was linked to osteoporosis, (I recalled that even Dr. Atkins recommended that you shouldn't do the diet without taking a calcium supplement). In short, she opened my eyes to the healing power of enzymes found only in raw foods.

I guess what really converted me are recent event's in my family. Right now my older brother is suffering from AIDS, and has recently taken a turn for the worse. Based on the info I read in the Barley book, I started looking into different kinds of vitamins and supplements that could help him make a recovery. I was actually looking for a good chelated muli-vitamin but what I discovered was SO MUCH better.

I came across some research done some years ago about domesticated animals and their health relative to their wild counterparts. For instance "When animals are put on human diets (cooked food), two things consistently occur: The animal's life span is cut by as much as 185%, and their weight increases by as much as 164%. Animals on human-style diets have lower brain weights than their wild counterparts."

What else do you need to know, right? The list of degenerative diseases of cats and dogs that can be cured by returning them to their natural raw diet is a mile long.

I also found this interesting:

"There was evidence of role reversal, with female cats becoming the aggressors and male cats becoming docile and passive, either acting perverted or showing no interest in sex."

Heh, but I guess I'm preaching to the choir. Right now my biggest hope is that my brother can get healthy enough to get out of the hospital so I can send him a care package of raw plant vitamins and probiotic enzymes. Those kinds of places will probably not let him have anything like that while under their 'care'.

Myself I have lost more than 40 pounds on what you guys call the SAD diet, and plan to lose another 10-15 before I get married in October! Maybe I can convince my fiancee to try it with me, she suffers from PCOS and endometriosis so her periods are super harsh, sometimes lasting as long three weeks.

Despite that, I'm optimistic about starting this new little adventure. Wish me luck!

Hello Rawnie,

Welcome to RFT

Raw definitely works and your fiancee may want to read on my blog about how beneficial raw can be for harsh menses.

Thanks! I'm sure that will interest her. Congrats on your success so far.

Also, don't they sell chia pets across the pond?
