As I prepare for my raw diet,I was curious about best veggies for protein. Fruits I can eat tons of,vegetables not so much. I dont really eat any greens. So,cabbage, kale, spinach? My moms having hissy, because she says I wont get any protein. Not a smoothie guy either,I already juice, and she wouldnt let me blend stuff as well. I also cant eat nuts, because of my tmj with jaw.
There is a web site...Nutrition Data . Com. You can enter your food and get the nutrition information on it. Green leafy veggies have a lot of protein. I try and war a head of something leafy every day. You could make kale chips.

If you're getting 97% of your calories or more from fruits you are should to get the amount of protein you need. I just eat fruits and greens and I get 40-70 grams of protein everyday. According to the RDA for my weight I need 39 grams of protein a day.
Use cronometer to check it out.

It's not protein per se that you want, it's amino acids. The combine to create the protein you need and can easily assimilate.

Thanks for mentioning Cron-o-meter! I just signed up. I had never considered a computer program to track my diet.

just be aware that a computer program doesn't know you from Adam and btw you can make nut milks which won't be a problem with your jaw. Although if you can't chew nuts, how do you chew kale?

I think that you need to worry more about minerals than protein. Without greens you are probably not getting enough minerals.

The protein thing frustrates me. I have never seen any other dietary issue get such attention from people (I mean non raw, non vegetarian people) as the freaking "Where do you get your protein" question...
I feel like it's something I've had to de-brainwash myself from, and am still in the process of doing so. It's like, you could live on Macdonalds for years and people wouldn't say anything. But the moment you suggest going raw vegan people get ultra concerned, act like you have some sort of eating disorder and start expressing concerns about "where you will get your protein"...
Even my boyfriend, who eats vegetarian with me all the time, has watched many raw/juicing/vegan/whatever documentaries with me, STILL, whenever I lean towards going all raw/vegan (Im high raw now) starts asking "What about protein?"
We've also had SCARY, screaming fights over this issue, believe it or not *sigh*... about me claiming that vegan foods have protein and him claiming no, they don't.
Why are people like this? /ok/ end rant
I always feel like I get a lot of protein from kale. But like I said, Im not all raw or vegan yet, trying to get there and figure this out myself. Sorry for the rant I'm sure it's been discussed here thousands of times. I just don't get why people have it in their heads that there is no protein in vegan foods.

I know what you mean Climbing ... If plants didn't contain all the amino acids required how would cows grow? Your bf needs a plant biology lesson

I try and talk to him about it but he gets angry and thinks I'm trying to control how he eats. Whenever we talk about raw vegans who are thriving he seems to think that's cool. But he doesn't seem to really believe it's possible so I sometimes wonder if he's just humoring me...

how is the truth about something anything other than the truth? Why is it you being controlling? Maybe he needs to know that whatever the truth is, he can eat his way whilst you can eat your way.

I was vegetarian when I was bringing up my son and I knew that it was right for me but I did not have enough confidence in it to bring him up that way so I think that I understand how he feels.

I don't think you need worry at all. Far as I know, it's just a waste of time and energy when you could be doing something productive. Eat a variety of raw fruits, veggies, greens, nuts and seeds.

Well with my partner I think it's mostly that he eats/takes so MUCH protein. He's gotten better over the years. He used to eat pounds of meat a day plus glass after glass of whey protein (ew sorry). He has changed a lot to where now he rarely eats meat but still drinks tons of the protein drinks. I think he believes that there are aminos in plant foods but not to the level that would match the massive amounts of protein he takes in daily. I still think he takes way too much but there's no convincing someone til they are ready.

Yes but you included greens in that list. That was the point I was making. You need greens for minerals.

I probably saw the biggest change in my overall health when I went off cooked grains and replaced them with raw greens. Even before going high raw!

as a guy you should also be considering how you are going to get enough bio available zinc from a raw food diet...

She won't let you blend?? Ahhh!
I know this doesn't exactly answer your question but it might help??
I like to make yogurt a lot.... If you have a food processor you can process some nuts into a powder, then add banana and some almond milk and any other flavors you want like berries or agave nectar or vanilla... It's got lots of protein from the nuts and it won't hurt your jaw.

Nice ^^ Do you leave it out overnight to ferment? I've made a lot of seed cheeses but never yogurt.

If you don't mind, could you tell me just what you're eating? I get frustrated because I used cronometer to measure my diet yesterday and it said I only got 20 something grams o protein. This from eating a green smoothie for breakfast, tons of bananas, another big salad for lunch and another for dinner. Tons of leafy greens like kale on all of them. And it only amounted to 20 something grams. I literally don't think I could cram more greens and fruit in me than I did yesterday.
So how in the HECK are you getting 40-70 grams of protein from just greens and fruit? What are you eating??

Where did you get the idea you need 40-70 grams of protein? What if that's inaccurate?
I NEVER had a clue as to how much protein I'm getting ~ or, anything else for that matter.

I'm not sure if cron o meter measures amino acids ... probably just proteins. maybe that is the reason for the discrepancy.

Just that I was eating tons more before I was vegan and doing well, building muscle and what not.
Do you think I should just continue workouts and watch my progress and decide my needs based on if I'm progressing or not?
It's so hard seeing that I'm getting such a low level of protein. But I am open to the idea that I've been totally brainwashed about my protein needs. I'm sort of in a stage of wanting to de-program that fear based belief that if I only eat vegan foods I will turn into a skinny little weakling and die. That belief isn't at the forefront of my mind or anything, but I'm self aware enough to see that it's still in there.
I was skinny (but strong) at 100+ grams of protein a day so it's hard for me to wrap my mind around the idea that I could eat 15-20 of vegan protein and not lose strength. But I really want it to be true.

Was just thinking that. Maybe I'll find another calorie site. This one doesn't measure aminos. I don't know how to set it so it does.

Question is, how much were you assimilating. I actually despise that they call animal produts "protein" now as though that's all it is and that's the ONLY place one can get it.

Absolutely! Oh hey, check out Zenkahuna and his ladies on YouTube. VEGAN!!!!

I was actually told that when I went vegetarian ~ that I'd be dead w/in a year. Well, 25+ years and still going!

I have stage 4 TMJ in one side of my jaw and Stage 5 on the other side. The bones are also necrotic. I eat some nuts, but I blend them into a pate. Other than that I also get most of my food through out the day in the form of fruits. I know that I get plenty of protein. If you don't like the idea of a pate or nut butter you should try sprouting. I sprout lentils and they are very soft to eat then. I also am not big into vegetables, but some sprouted lentils and/or quinoa with some kale or cabbage isn't to bad!
