Very very unlikely.
Soak them in water and see if they swell up, if they don't they are not true raw almonds.

Hey mr raw, I have actually soaked the almonds before and they did swell up quiet a bit, Could they be raw?

any almond will swell if soaked, the key is if they sprout when you soak them - and that only goes for the organic ones really as non-organic ones can have been pasteurised with chemicals rather than heat.
Blissingod -- If you are in the USA, it's illegal to buy raw almonds in the store. This is a good online source for them: http://organicalmondsraw.com
Hope that helps!

Really? At my old work they sold bags of almonds that claimed they were 100% organic, raw and unpasteurized. Do you think the label was just lying? Can they do that? That's a bummer if so, I ate tons of those.

l have done experiments. Some so called `raw' almonds will not swell much at all. Other proper raw almonds swell much more. A big difference between the two.
the key is if they sprout when you soak them -
Are you 100% positive about this? lt is widely said that almonds are called soaks because they never actually sprout.

Anything that is dried will swell if you soak it and I have sprouted almonds so I guess, yes, I am sure.

So sprouted almonds actually get a tail (hook) come out of them?

yes. I don't have any almonds in the house at the moment but I'll try to take a picture next time I sprout them. I don't let it get very long before I eat the almonds though ...

Amazing. l can't wait to see the pics, very exciting. l couldn't pick almonds off the trees this year, all the birds took them and consequently robbed me of almond dinners.
All the soruces l have read said you can't sprout them, that's why they called them "soaks". Maybe they haven't been getting the right almonds, even the legends like Wigmore could have made mistakes.

Either breaking the law (which is stupid that it's a law anyways, so I wouldn't blame 'em!) or not true.

Hey, that is where I got my last batch of raw almonds, great almonds!
Now this thread has me thinking, before I was able to find truly raw almonds, I just did the next best thing, raw from the grocery store, I know not really raw at all. Anyway, the "raw" ones from the store did swell when I soaked them, but after getting the truly raw almonds and soaking them, I can confirm that the truly raw almonds swell up A LOT more then the "raw" ones from a store. Like almost double the size.....some serious swellage :)

You can also look for raw italian/sicilian almonds, those are truly raw. For some crazy reason, it's only almonds grown in the USA that are required to be pasteurized.
