Avocado prices

Why are they so expensive right now?! I live in Chicago and was able to buy avocados for cheap (50 cents each) this time last year. I am sure they are cheaper in other parts of the country, but why so expensive here?

I'm in California where many of the avos are grown, and they're not even that cheap here right now. If I had to venture a guess, it would be the wonky weather. I was at the farmer's market today, and one of the farmers was explaining to me that the weather totally ruined most of the crop of white peaches. He said they're pretty delicate, and even the few he was able to get were sort of watered down and flavorless. So I wouldn't be surprised if the weather has caused shortages of other crops as well. Of course, I could be totally wrong, ha!

Summer is when prices typically go down in the U.S., especially for fruit. But I've noticed that isn't as much the case this summer. It use to be one of the best things about summer-more fruit available and at low prices.

They are 1.18 an avocado here right now (north carolina). For awhile they were .99 cents an avocado.

I was wondering that too! We're paying $7.99 for 5 large Haas avos @ Costco. The price is up from $5.99... *Ü*

I get 4 small green/brown, knobbly avocados for £1.50
I would say that two of these are about equal to 1 medium-large avo but maybe three would equal one of those giant smooth-skinned types ... except that the ones I get have very small stones so you barely get a dent in the flesh.

These tiny ones are great for people who only want a half avocado.

Im paying $1.25 per medium organic avocado here.

In Memphis, a smaller, organic avocado is around $1.80. :-/ Too much for me when the non-organic is $.79-$1

Thanks. Conventional ones here are anywhere from $1.50-3 and organic from $3-4.75.

I paid $1.49 each at a Mexican grocery yesterday in SE TN. I was surprised.
