I have been learning and reading about raw foods for quite some time now and have done shorts stints of eating raw food. My husband and I are ready to take the 30 day raw food challenge together. I am very excited to be getting started, but the one thing that concerns me is that the cost of nuts which seems to be a raw food staple are very expensive. Is this something other raw foodist suck up in order to eat this way? Are there any sources where nuts can be bulke ordered for less money. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make this more affordable I would appreciate it.

I have found the farmers market to be a great place to buy truly raw nuts at very good prices. Places like Whole Foods also sell them in bulk, but they can still be costly. Also, for myself, I relied a whole lot on nuts during the first month or so I was raw, but then found myself not really needing them as much. It seems like I go through phases of wanting more rich foods, but oftentimes I am happy to just thrive on fruit and salads, maybe with a few nuts thrown on top. If you're planning to do a lot of gourmet recipes though, yes, you will need to stock up on nuts!
Well don't expect them to be free ;) Compare their price to the price of meat, or big mac or smth, I bet they come out cheaper.

I rarely ever buy nuts/seeds. I rely more on fresh fruit and vegetables/leafy greens to get in my calories. :)
You can perhaps stick to the cheaper ones like sunflower and pumpkin seeds, then sprout/soak them. Also sesame.
Then mix chia and flax seeds. Soak them of course, make crackers out of them.
Sometimes I get walnuts and pecans. that's it really.

Best not to go through the normal buying methods. Speak to a farmer, tell him you're a raw gal, say you wanna buy in bulk and organise a deal. Even get a few people in on the deal and buy a large amount. Seeds are good currency for bartering.
Also try buying certified organic sesame seeds. They will replace some nut meals, but they need to be grounded up or chewed very carefully. Cheaper than nuts.
l bought 20kg of organic chestnuts for $100.
l bought 25 kg of sesame seeds for $250
l probably won't get through all of that but l also use the nuts and seeds as currency with other raw dudes and we live cheaper as a result. A year supply of food there.

Another thing:
avoid buying nuts from the shops because they are too expensive and not the most health building because they are dead because they usually won't sprout (finding nuts in shops that will sprout is virtually unheard of).
Buy the good foods. Go straight to the farm and pick the nuts yourself. Dop it with love, have a relationship with your food and sprout them all. Don't let someone else do it for you, that's too cold...need to do things with love and nurture a relationship, it will make you appreciate food much better and being raw is so much deeper this way. Raw is not just eating raw food, it's a whole way of thinking.
Probably easiest to order a big sack of sesame from the shops. Get it with the hulls on it. Tell the shop owners that it needs to sprout or you will return it. Go to a top health food shop and do it right. lf you can't find a good health food shop, find a sesame wholesaler and talk business....work something out and make sure they will sprout. Be firm with these wholesale guys, but be nice.
lt's amazing what deals can be done if you talk to suppliers the right way. l've had one lady reduce Brocolli seeds from $170 a kg down to $55 a kg and also say she will supply me with stuff below wholesale price. l am the only fellow that isn't a company that is allowed to deal with her...l am a special case. * wink* All l need to do is buy in bulk. Easy! When you are a sproutarian the same rules don't apply as with everyone else, it never does! l buy more seeds than the major health foods shops so they need to treat me extra special and do things my way, and they do. *smile*

I was a big nut/seed eater also when i was trying to follow the awesome gourmet recipes when i started my journey(only 3 weeks ago) but buying all these different varieties for one dish was costly so i gave up nuts for a low fat raw diet where i eat more veggies and fruits since it's simpler, much quicker, and cost effective. I plan to only buy nuts on special occasions for making desserts since that is where i see them used the most. I figure for cheezes i could substitute with avocado in the recipes on those days i really want cheese. But for making almond milk i'd just take the bullet and buy raw almond butter and that's the only thing nut wise that i would use more frequently and you only need 1/4 cup to make 32oz worth of milk and i'm not doing that weekly so 10 bucks for a 16oz jar that could last 1-3 months isn't bad. Decide whats best for you and weigh your options. Happy Raw!!:throwhearts:
