I adore watermelon so yummy and good for you but... After a cup and a half or two cups I'll feel so sick after. Like back and stomach pains even my arms will ache! It'll usually last half an hour to an hour. This never happened on a SAD diet, but I doubt I ate that much watermelon then either... Anyways anyone else get this or maybe know why? Thanks guys!

I'm never really sure how much a cup is but why not try eating only a cupful until your body is more accustomed to it.

edited to add ... how soon after other foods are you eating it or do you eat it in isolation? If you eat it after a meal where you've had fats - nuts, grains etc then it could easily be down to poor food combining.

I have the same thing when I eat watermelon. I tried everything to see what it was, eating it only in the morning, eating it after a lot of water, eating it before a lot of water (don't do that one, it makes it a lot worse), eating only a small amount. The pain was inconsistent, sometimes I wouldn't get it, sometimes I would get it after 1 or 2 bites, and sometimes it would hit me HARD 10 minutes after eating half a watermelon.

One thing that I find is that it's intensified if I have nightshades in my diet, I have a nightshade sensitivity. Nightshades must have done something to my stomach to make the pain worse. If I ate tomatoes the night before I'd have it worse when I ate watermelons in the morning.Try removing nightshades and any other potential sensitivities and see if it gets better. One thing I didn't try, also, is buying an organic melon.

For me, I LOVE watermelon but it gives me a horrible pain in my stomach, upper stomach area, neck and back. Eventually, after I was eating it continually day after day, it started to give me an upset stomach. I just decided to take a break from the watermelon, the past has taught me that little symptoms like this can mean big imbalances in the bodies systems that aren't worth dealing with. It was really hard to say goodbye to watermelon because it's my favorite! All I can think, is that it's either a watermelon allergy, OR it's a light case of fructose malabsoprtion, Basically Fructose Malabsorption is a condition where fructose, a simple sugar molecule, is not absorbed properly in the small intestine. It moves through to the large intestine, where it doesn't belong, and bacteria eat it. When the bacteria digest fructose it produces hydrogen gas. I believe this can be caused by previous damage to your system (food sensitivities, candida, etc..) Just guesses. I'd love to really KNOW what it is.... Fructose malabsoprtion sounds accurate to me, because to me it feels like some kind of gas in my stomach or something causing the pain, and having it burn up through my body and somehow inflame my muscles or something.

When I eat nightshades, which damage my digestive system, I also have the same thing with grapes, but that doesn't happen anymore, so I hope as my system heals I won't have this pain and hopefully neither will you, and we can both enjoy our lovely watermelons.

It has a very high glycemic index.

Was it organic? If not, try in the future to eat only organic.

Also, if you have this strong response from your body, then i would stay away from that food for a time being and perhaps try later once you have done more tuning with your body.

They were food i couldn't eat, now i can. Honey melon gave me nausea before and now, i love that. I couldn't do wheat grass now i can drink it pure just like that. It took me two years to be able to get where i am.

Listen to your body and don't force thing out just now.

It's my understanding that watermelon is extremely detoxifying. Perhaps that has something to do with it. It's also my understanding that melons should be eaten alone as well. *Ü*

It seems like all I've eaten is watermellon this summer. Can't get enough of it. I'd back off a bit on it if it were causing me pain. Agree about the food combining. Mellon is best on its own.

Watermellon hold nutrients like strawberrys ( VERY Systemic).

If you eat watermellon eat organic only. Sounds like they did not flush them well.

We grow em commercially, I have 6 strains runnin now. Organically.

Also watermellon has a batch of enzimes that work me hard also. That is good, very good. Anytime we eat seasonal local fresh bounty crops like mellons berrys ect. Stuff we dont eat daily we get a new load of fresh enzimes that are not in other foods. When I grow or shop for my familys food I shop for variety of enzimes not food. :)

Sorry what are nightshades? And maybe I'll try organic because I love them so much! It's good to know I'm not the only one this happens to though

nightshades are plants from the nightshade family such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, bell peppers for example.

Deadly Niteshades aka belladonnas.
Related to the tomatoe, acidic death I call em....I still eat em. Ha.

Alkaloids Atropine in root of belladonna for Shamanism and witchcraft. We grow em for market, they test Alkaloid content for grade.

Sorry what are nightshades?

Always eat watermelons on an empty stomach, i.e. in the mornings, and eat it alone (not combined or before/after with other foods). This may be one of the reasons it wasn't sitting well with you, another could be that it caused detox symptoms. Remember that watermelon is one of the most alkalizing fruits out there, and one of the most powerful 'flushers' of the body and accumulated toxins. I used to hate watermelon as a kid, but now I Love it, and eat at least one a week for breakfast! :D

I'm the opposite. I don't like the way watermelon tastes. HOWEVER, I have always had a problem with my legs swelling, ever since I developed Bloodclots in my early 20's. But I've found that if I eat a wedge of watermelon in the afternoon or evening, my legs won't swell the next day!

That's interesting. Do you have a similar experience with other high water content foods such as cucumber or other types of melon?

Nope, it just seems to be the watermelon. I eat cucumbers every day in my salad for both lunch and dinner. And first thing in the morning I eat both honeydew and cantaloupe, but none of that seems to have any effect.

What a shame you don't like the taste. Some are heaps better flavoured than others and some, occasionally, have a horrible texture but I love water melon - the UK isn't the best place to get them so next year I may try growing some even if I have to make a poly tunnel!

My boyfriend says the last watermelon I tried wasn't that great, so I'll try another one. But I'll eat it every day if it keeps my legs from swelling! Gotta love finding natural cures!

Wow that's amazing! My aunt got diagnosed with breast cancer recently and her natropath has her on watermelon and leek soup so it must be pretty great stuff!
