The Asian market across from my office has boxes of them at a reasonable price.
Any idea of what to do with them? Can I make raw "fig newton" cookies?
Just looking for inpiration to decide if I want to buy some and try something new. I figured variety is the spice of life & I like to try at least one new recipe every week to keep things fresh.

Great idea!! I might try that. I don't think I could eat a whole box fast enough without dehydrating, but I thought they'd make a nice treat while they seem to be in season.

These are fresh figs, right? Or dried?
I LOVE them fresh! Sweet! Juicy, fresh figs. I recieved a shoebox full, ate some throughout the day. They lasted 3 days in the fridge... and only that long because I ATE 'EM!!!

I found this recipe (http://veganexcellence.com/index.php?option=com_rapidrecipe&page=viewrecipe&recipe_id=4&Itemid=56) for raw fig newtons that was on an old RFT thread (that I found doing a Google search) ...
I might have to try it!

remove stem end of figs
scoop out the insides of each one with a spoon and place these seeds and pulp into a bowl
open figs to resemble a small bowl, with the help of the spoon
mix cacao, honey, chopped walnuts, shredded coconut, cinnamon (or be creative and use your pwn favorite ingredients) into the removed fig filling
restuff the figs with the blended filling.
Dust with more cinnamon, stevia, etc., garnish with mint
Enjoy

Saw some at Costco today and had to walk past them since I am on a juice fast. Open and eat is the way to go. Can top with a nut cream if you want fancier, too.
Given they are rather higher fiber, may not want to eat the whole box in one or two sittings as could be rather cleansing.

You know, I love the taste and texture of dates, but I can't seem to down raw figs. I have eaten them in fig newtons and in trail mixes (dried), but just for some reason I don't like the texture of raw figs. Maybe, I have never had real ones fresh and should try them. They get so many good reviews.

If you get to eat them off the tree then they should have a "dew drop" coming from the base when ripe. If you have to get them from a shop then it's a bit more difficult but they can be quite soft and still not be too far gone. The skins should be smooth rather than wrinkled and they need to be much softer (careful not to bruise) than a lot of other fruit. They shouldn't be squishy though - heck they are difficult to explain.
Inside, the texture should be almost like a firm puree. They should not be dry inside but have a sort of soft-set jam texture with tiny seeds. The ones we get here are purple on the outside and deep, decadent red on the inside-keeping with the decadent theme, just tear them open and shmooze them into your mouth!!!
You can eat the skins too but the stalk is about all that isn't worth bothering about.

So, I don't need to peel them? I just don't eat the stem and can bite into it like a peach?
Just bought some at Sprouts fresh and realized that the ones I had eaten were dehydrated, I think??? They were in a sealed bag where they sell prunes. I guess I have really never had fresh ones. My mom is Italian and loved them. I have to try these ones I bought today. 9 for $3. So if I like them, I can get some while they are in season.

you don't need to peel them if they are properly ripe because the skin is quite thin. On unripe ones it can be thick and pithy.

I hope I haven't steered you wrong....without thinking much about it I posted a favorite preparation for sun-dried figs. I hope it will work as well for you with fresh figs. I imagine they might be a little harder to empty out with their more delicate skins, which I'd forgot about. I apologize in the event it does not work well.
