Mango smelled good and felt ripe until I peeled it

On the inside the mango was all stringy and mostly inedible. It tasted bad and smelled sour. The skin however still smelled good by itself.

What does it mean when mangos are like this and how do I avoid them?

I'm not a mango expert by any means and I tend to have less than good luck with them as well. I stick with the Champagne or Ataulfo mangoes (http://www.champagnemango.com/site/champagne) as I have the best luck with those. I don't have good luck with the green/red mangoes...
