I have this huge craving for nuts/seeds these past few days. I don't eat my nuts salted of course so i don't think it's my body wanting salt and i eat a few handfuls to help the cravings but i worry its in excess craving. Some days i want to only eat nuts all day. Is my body just craving more protein/fats? I normally have a green smoothie in the morning with spinach, 2 collard leafs, and 2 bananas and then a collard leaf wrap at lunch which has the mock salmon pate in it also i snack on fruit while im working if im hungry between meals. Where am i going wrong to satisfy my body?

I would say to listen to your body. Some days my body does better on nuts and fats. I tend to eat what my body is craving. If I eat too many nuts, I start craving other things. I think it balances out in the end as long as you are getting an overall variety.

LOL agreed. Last night i made Alissa's fudge balls to take to work for co workers to see raw isn't that bad and i couldn't stop licking the spoon! I used almond butter and man it hit the spot hard and now my cravings have quieted down today

Sometime, we need the good fat in order to get ride of the bad one.

So go for it, if you crave for it, do eat them (Soak of course)

It sounds as if you are just craving fat, possibly because you aren't getting enough at your other meals.

That is not a good sign, it's never going to satisfy you, that's why you need to keep on eating them. People who start doing that often fall off the wagon quite quickly because they are always chasing something and end up overdoing the fat.

l wouldn't think so. l'm sure you are getting more than enough fat and protein if you are eating 100 grams or more of them a day.

Get some high quality high nutrient carbs via sprouted grains and sprouted beans into you asap. That should stop the craving for nuts/seeds.

You could always try having extra fruit, but that is always a risk too. Best to stick with the sprouted grains and beans me think.

Mock Salmon pate is made with walnut, celery, green onion, sea salt and red pepper.

I think nuts/seeds rebuild the membranes in the body. They also go hand in hand with the hormone production. Cholesterol is needed to make hormones in the body. Also neurotransmitters.

There's also proteins in them.

I'd say eat more veggies though. Don't have too much nuts/seeds. You need the vitamins and minerals as well.

In general I try to have at least 2 lbs of greens. I'd say 2-5lbs of greens a day is good. If greens are not filling enough have more veggies, then nuts. When I say veggies I mean not the greens. The greens are the base in my diet but since they digest rather quickly and don't fill me up as much I use veggies like cucumber, celery, broccoli, peppers, cauliflower, summer squashes, sprouts, and bean sprouts, etc. I don't use grains though. I moderate the bean sprouts also, just putting them in salads.

Don't use oils for filler when you're not getting enough of the other foods. I know it's easy to do that.

I'm no expert. So you should probably listen to the others, but here's my experience. When I started raw I needed a ton of nuts and seeds. I couldn't get enough. Then our town flooded and I went off raw while eating crappy foods and sandbagging for two weeks. When I went back to raw, I got by with very little other than fruits and veggies. I think the second time around my body was prepared for it. So I think that if you eat what you think you need and start slowly reducing them, it would do about the same thing.

You might try adding coconut oil or avocado into your green smoothie to replace some of the nuts.

Good luck! I thought I would always want a handful of nuts between meals. Now I don't even crave them. And it has only been 2 months total, including my cooked/flooded two weeks!

l think the important thing to remember is not to be getting a high percentage of your calories from fat. Lots of successful raw foodist recommend getting most calories from carbohydrates, some from protein, and some from fat (maybe up to 20%).

SAD is high in fat and eaters of this diet are usually unhealthy and tired. Many raw foodist diet is high in fat too, and many raw foodist are unhealthy and tired too.

also not to mention that an imbalanced diet contributes to the cravings.

Ie, you have too many fruits mixed with fats. Or you have too many fats of the omega 6 type and not enough omega 3s, you have too mch sugar, not enough greens, not enough veggies, or too much greens, etc.

Not to mention microorganisms in the gut can also have their own cravings which may influence you...

I also think though that it's ok to have 40% of the calories fat AS LONG as you are eating raw and getting the correct ratio of omega 3 and 6. There might also necessitate the exercise as it might have to do with the protein requirements of athletic activity. Otherwise, I think 15-20% is max. At least that's what Gabriel Cousens suggests. He also suggests that everyone have at least 2-5 lbs of greens to prevent one from overeating any excess fruit or nuts/seeds/oils. You can have oils in your salads though.

Not to say 40% is for everyone but he recommends 15-40% depending on constitution and lifestyle needs.

Since fat in any vegan diet may be low in cholesterol it's always good to take coconut oils or fats saturated fats (ie avocado) to stimulate the production of cholesterol. By cholesterol I mean Good (HDL) cholesterol. Without cholesterol you can't even properly digest the fats you take in, and end up being bloated and having high coristol.

As for the fats argument.. I think we are different from apes in that we can crack more nuts than they can, and thus make it easier to find protein. We don't have to eat as much shrubbery just to get the daily requirements of protein.
