I was wondering if someone could explain to me why you keep sprouts in the dark when sprouting?

I am no expert but two things i learned from this board and from a friend of mine that is great with sprouting.

Beans- they become softer
Seeds- prevent from molding

I will be watching the thread to learn more from others

All the best!

I only heard that recently - about keeping seeds in the dark while sprouting. I've never done that. I set mine out on the counter top - most times on top of the fridge because they're out of the way there and I have very limited counterspace. They sprout just fine and I've never had moldy sprouts. I sprout in glass mason jars with sprouting lids.

So - they get sunlight, just not direct sunlight.

Then on the last day, I do set them in bright filtered sunlight to green on up!*Ü*

Keeps the sprouts from getting too fiberous. Keeps them nice and juicy.

Seeds- prevent from molding

Darkness doesn't prevent moulding. Moulding can be caused by many differnt things, eg:

* too many seeds in the one sprouting container (poor air circulation)
* poor air circulation (caused by above or not enough air getting into the sprouting container)
* not enough water pressure to clean the sprouts properly

lf sprouts get mould it is best to add 1/2 tea spoon of Hydrogen Peroxide to a liter of filtered energised water and use on the sprouts. But just as important is to use a high pressured water sprayer by using a car tyre pump and filling the water sprayer with compressed air until it has 60 pounds of pressure inside per square inch and blasting them. l'm currently making a video on this as we speak, hopefully it will be ready in a few weeks.

I wonder how our ancestors ever survived long enough to start this whole human race thing!

Unfortunately, living in modern day environments sometimes calls for this sort of drastic action.

Mystic you are just too real!

The sprouts are delicate and can't dissipate their heat like a plant rooted in the soil. They depend on us to water them and cool them down. Indirect light is fine and sprouts will develope their full chlorophyll with little light or shade. Direct light can cook them and ruin your crop.
