View Full Version : Sprouting Grains vs Soaking Grains

I think I am needing to add more carbs to my current diet. Previously I had an eating disorder, and when I wasn't getting enough carbs/fat, I would start craving junky carbs and candy. I've been getting that lately, and realized that other than carbs from fruit, I'm essentially getting no carbs in my diet. I was looking into sprouting, but right now, I work 10 hours a day and don't have the required amount of time to put into it. Are there any grains that you can just soak before using, and maybe toss onto a salad??

buckwheat and quinoa take almost no time at all. Rinse in a jar and leave to soak over night then rinse in the morning before work and set to drain. They are ok to eat after that morning rinse as they will have already started sprouting. At the end of the day where they have been set to drain though they will be obviously sprouting. rinse again and drain then eat!

I've never tried quinoa so far, would you say it digests well?
I see it's 50% starch, and I'm always a bit scared of raw starch :)

I don't have a problem with it but suggest you try it yourself and see how you get on.

Thanks! I'll give quinao a try tonight. How long does sprouted quinao keep? Do you think I'd be able to make up a week's worth at a time?

Do quinoa sprouts have a strong odor?

mine don't. They have a nutty mealy sort of smell.

If they smell icky then the rinsing and draining has not been done properly.

They don't really have an icky smell. Just a noticable smell.

I soaked them overnight, and then drained and rinsed about 9. Left the grains in a strainer over a bowl. Checked to make sure water wasn't overly collecting in the bowl every couple of hours. Drained and rinsed again about 3, and then around 11. This morning I transferred them to a long, shallow container to spread them out and let them dry before I put them in the fridge when I get home from work.

Does that sound ok?

How long should them safely keep?

Thanks so much for your patience and help!

if the smell is just noticeable rather than icky then I'd try a few and see how you like them. I only ever sprout a small number at a time and use them within 2 days.

Quinoa is great and no smell. Rinse it well once done.

You can make many thing with it. I like to use it for my tabole salad. Very good. I sometime make rejuvelac with it.

Enjoy!

soak hard or rye wheat seed 48 hours , change water every 8 hours or so

after which theyre chewy

some times i pour almond mylk over these then add things like fruit / raisins / cinnamon for a breakfast cereal type food

and im thinking if you were to add herbs / spices to soaking water could alter taste to make the seeds usable in other type recipes

say like adding garlic / tomato juice / basil for a spaghetti like taste ,
or whatever - theres all kinds of possibilities . but if any would taste good i dont know

No, they need to be sprouted.

I actually made a point of smelling the quinoa sprouts today. They smell of vibrant growing really - like very new grass or something. They are perfect taste-wise. So I think that is just what they smell of.

Been scared of quinoa lately (even a small amount makes me feel green gilled). Been sprouting amaranth (lots), rice (lots), barey, wheat, oats, millet (lots), rye, corn instead.

Has anyone tried sprouting Canawa? lt's an lndian grain and small like Amaranth.

l'll be on rice sprouts all next week. l have a friend who gets tails/hooks on his rice sprouts that are 3 times the length of the rice after 3 days of sprouting. Having proper water is vital and being free from electrical radiation is also vital for optimal growing. You would be surprised how electrical appliances and mobile phones effect growth rates...we have done the experiments.

I'm always a bit scared of raw starch :)
You should be. l am abit scared of it too.

Quinoa. A 4 hour soak time and ready in less than two days.

Sprouted Barley, Rye and Wheat is also quick.
