View Full Version : Day old smoothies and yuck feeling afterwards.

I have read threads that says it is okay to pre-make a green smoothie, like for the next day. I know this is not the case with fresh made juice so that's not what I'm talking about. Twice in the last couple of days I have over made my green smoothies and put the extra in a quart jar with a lid on the refrigerator. The next day I drink the rest of the left over smoothie, and each time I have not felt well afterwards. I mean, I didn't feel terrible but just a mild case of the yucks. I started to wonder if I should save smoothies or if something in them is going bad in a days time in the fridge.

Has this ever happened to any of you?

Just so you know the smoothies had banana, mango, pineapple and spinach in them.

Probably it started fermenting, if the fruits were overripe :)

Hmmm, maybe. I do tend to buy mango in bulk. They are 10 for $10 at my local grocery store, but I keep them in the fridge.

Would the fruit start to ferment in the refrigerator?

I think so if they are very ripe.

Bottom line is if you feel icky afterwards then try to make less - also over ripe fruit is probably a bad idea anyway.

I've tried and I just don't care for smoothies that have been stored, even for a few hours. I have to drink it right then or out it goes. I'm not a picky eater either, but there's just something about 'less than fresh' green smoothies - no thank you. *Ü*

It might be ok, but i cannot tolerate it, it has to be fresh.

What i suggest instead, is to wash all of your produce in advance instead to save time and then quickly make your smoothie in the morning.

I do that and i drink it by lunch and it is perfectly fine.

I would not hold over a smoothie with banana in it. That just sounds bad to me. I will drink a 24-48 hr old smoothie make with kale, apple, pear and lemon. My experience has been that they taste pretty fresh. Maybe the lemon helps preserve the smoothie.

I was at a family reunion for 3 days and I carried a smoothie for day 2 with me. I will be going on a church mission trip and I will go with green smoothie in the cooler!

also oxidation happens right away, that's why you want to drink it asap to get the nutrients and enzymes before it's too late! :eat

I've never ever had an issue with smoothies going bad the next day and I often use very ripe bananas. I just shake it up and drink. Been doing this for yrs and it's worked fine.

One reason I may not have issues is because I always refrigerate bananas to keep them fresh for up to a month and makes smoothies taste better. The coldness could be what helps keep my smoothies fresh for a longer period.

I make a lot of green drinks/smoothies in my vitamix and instead of adding ice, i add them to the fridge for a hour and then drink. I have also sometimes had leftover and added to fridge for the next day and i just don't like the taste. So now if i make to much, i just make sure to drink it that day sometime.

After 30 minutes my bean/grain sprout smoothies start to taste bad.
After 30 seconds my apple smoothies (very rare for me to have) go brown.

People say that you can store smoothies, but l don't think this is a very good idea. Drink them as soon as possible.
