View Full Version : I got me a hoop!

My bf bought some pipe today and we have made a hula hoop.

Oh my goodness am I bad at it. I think at most I got it to loop about six times round before it fell to the floor. Then it started raining so I had to come in.

I am planning to do a little bit every day, maybe morning and night, until I can actually keep it going indefinitely. Then I may try the occasional flourish!

I'm getting a little better but I think I'm trying too hard and the hoop is very slippery and a little on the light side.

What sort of weight is your hoop (or hoops if you have more than one)?

I've got lots since I bought 300 (total) feet of 3 different sizes and weights. My main on-the-body hoops weigh just about 1 1/2 lbs. Try putting one foot forward and closing your eyes so you can feel it.

Have you seen this?

http://www.bodaciousliving.com/members/videos/45-Corkscrews.html?userid=84 Took me literally WEEKS to get this! ... and, WEEKS to be able to just get it going 'round my waist. Others get it immediately.

yes I watched it the other day and it's giving me something to shoot for. I'm loving the variety on youtube and one of my favourites goes beyond the hula-hoop ... I'll try to find the link because it is astounding.

don't worry though - I'm not aiming for this level ;)

By bf has made me a slightly smaller hoop and has taken up hooping with the first one. He is better than me and has never hooped in his life ... he is slim and fit which I think helps and I haven't given up but maybe I should go to belly-dancing classes to help out with the muscle in this area ...

He is already able to walk a circle whilst hooping and has a top rev count of 75

I managed 10

and now we are vying for the space in the living room cos it's raining outside!

No worries. I'd be more inspired if you did! Thanks for sharing that. Incredibly beautiful!!! HUGE hoop!

My husband is like that as well. Picked it up and began hooping. Can't do a corkscrew though!!! Heh! Keep working it. See if maybe spinning the other way might help? Did I suggest putting one foot in front of the other? That often helps.

I think it is mostly being out of condition. I have obviously been using muscles in the right area as I can feel where they've been working. I hope to be able to get to 20 revs tomorrow (bf is aiming for 100!). Although I think counting doesn't help with technique.

I do put one foot in front and it makes a little bit of a difference.

That is definitely something to shoot for ... meantime I have made it to 25 waist revs ... and i'm really enjoying it.

I have no idea how you all do it with so little apparently body movement. I can only do it by rocking back and forth from one foot to another and if the hoop rises above my waist - which it does do occasionally - it hits the underside of the girls and plummets to the floor

 Those girls... always causing trouble.

What it sounds like to me is the forward push is harder than then back push. The back push brings the hoop down; the forward push, up. Congrats on the 25!!! :woohoo:

I think that once I have a wash-board abdomen ( ) the situation will improve. There is more contact with the the muscles at the back than at the front due to my spare tyre.

I am working on those abs in another exercise and building up slowly.

There's a lot of women hooping, including myself, who don't have that. You've seen me!

it's not meant to be excuses ... it's meant to be encouraging me that if I practice I will get better ... obviously that last link is less than encouraging :(

Really? How's that? I'm confused. It shows people of all shapes and sizes hooping. It shows that everyone can do it. Also shows one very slim woman having difficulties while others, not-so-slim can do it. For me, when I see others doing something I'm having difficulty with, I say "If they can do it..."

I feel I should be doing better than I am. If it was just a matter of slimming down/toning up then I could say yeah, I can do that and the hooping will come with practice but if the two in the vid are having no difficulty (whilst overweight) and lots of difficulty (whilst slim) then I just feel that it makes no difference if I practice all day - maybe I just can't do it :(

It may be just that I am on a real down at the moment - see blog.

Well, MANY women have eliminated LOTS of weight hooping. I'm down about 5 pounds now... looking to get rid of the "spare tire" I've had since marriage and meno.

I do understand what you mean though. It took me so much longer than it's taken others just to get waist hooping. Now I've got that. Took me 5+ weeks to get the corkscrew in my vid while others get it within a few minutes of seeing it. I'm working on shoulder hooping now and during the teacher training those who couldn't get it before, got it. Not me!

One thing I know is, for me, if I want it, I'll get it. It just may take me longer than some... maybe even most yet, I don't compare myself with what others do or can do. Good for them! And good for me for being persistent ~ and, good for you! You've gone from none to 25!!! Today, you're going to do even better! So there! I has spoken! :kisses:

Whirling on in here on this discussion! I've been hooping for just a little over a year, and it is powerful stuff! Like everyone else, I couldn't keep that hoop up for more than a few spins around the waist, but by the second class, I knew I was hooked. I took ballet classes(was pretty good at it as an adult having the right build etc. plus a feel for movement in general) but later got into gym-only and some outdoor distance walking over the years. But pretty soon I got into the groove of having a blast and yes, flow does come. One has to not over-think anything when one is hooping - really, another part of the brain and one's being takes over and that's when magic happens, even early on when one starts nailing a move. What's really fun is when one is able to put a couple of moves together, and then more and more until one has a whole cool thing going on. I know, that last part might seem far away for a very beginner, but it can also happen surprisingly fast too. Don't fret about your weight - all body types hoop, and indeed, you might find over a period of time your body will change too. Hooping can be surprisingly good cardio, burning up a significant amount of calories, but most importantly, it reconnects one with forgotten aspects of oneself, a very empowering thing for women!
Don't get discouraged if some things seem to take longer to click than others - this is so common! Some moves come right away, while others seem to take forever, until one day it just pops into place and one wonders what all the fuss was about with having that hard time!
On my way later to advanced hoop dance class with my awesome teacher tonight!
Best of luck on your hooping journey! There are a lot of online resources to help too, on YouTube, Hooping.org, etc. There are all styles of working with a hoop too, and once you nail some basics, you will find your way. Hope this helps!

Thank you for your support it is appreciated and I am sorry I haven't replied before but I forgot to check the thread - I should subscribe to it really :)

This evening I progressed to a hoopy 67 revs and was over the moon. Then I decided to try some twirling on my hands and I got that ok, only taking the light out a couple of times. I switched between hand twirling and waist hooping and after 20 mins or so and with the aid of a Bob Dylan's Greatest hits CD I got up to 90 revs. When I get to 100 I may stop counting. We'll see.

I can also do a fair bit of turning while I hoop but I can't hoop the opposite way at all - I hoop to the right.

Every now and then, as long as I am not really thinking about it, I can get the hoop back up if it starts to slip off the waist but because I am not thinking about it, I have no idea what I am doing which is a little frustrating.

Is this hooping related to hoopnotica and it's dvd sets cause i've been looking into trying the program out. I think it would be fun and a great training for when i get into belly dance plus i get sick of my same old work out routines very fast so i need something new to be excited about for a while lol

Well, this thread is not related to that but I took their teacher training, levels 1 and 2... which helped me a lot. Their trainings are based on their Dvd's. (http://bit.ly/jLXdJi)

Hooping has made everything else I do ~ FUN!!!!

I'd love to watch their dvds but I don't have a tv. At a pinch I can watch things on the computer but I can't hoop at the same time because the computer is currently in the box room under the loft bed! I could only barely finger-hoop a bangle at my computer
