Sorry to start two topics. Also wondering if anybody has managed or known any horses that are on a raw diet.
Most people even if their horses are out in pasture all day will still need to give hardfeed or something extra. There are natural/organic options for them but most of these are heat treated, costly and been shipped half way around the world. Im interested in trying to grow the food and make it myself or at least the bulk of it.
Good hay seems very difficult to come by but seen as most the horses when ad lib on hay go through 7 nets + cant even imagine one acre planted out for one horse being enough space. maybe i am wrong, i am terrible at maths.

good hay has always been hard to find. We did grow some for ours but it was never enough to get them through.

You can grow flats of barley-grass but that is very time consuming if you have a lot of horses.

Good pasture management is the key. The best way to get the nutrients into the horse is to look after your soil!

Tell me about it! If you dont mind me asking how many animals did you need the hay for and what amount did you grow?
I will look into the barley-grass. I dont have any horses at the moment so how many I end up with depends on the space and how much I need for growing etc.

I think we had 2 horses and 1 pony. The hay was from about 2-3 acres. It's a long time ago and the winters are much milder these days it seems.
