OK,, seriously,, is this thing edible?? It is nothing but a bunch of seeds and the rest is terrible tasting. What part of it are we supposed to eat?

My kids liked to suck on the seeds but I would not buy them again cause I had about 200 seeds all over the table by the time 6 kids were done eating them......imagine my surprise when I got out of the shower and there were just these seeds all over the kitchen table!!

Pomegranate is best juiced in my opinion. If you add some agave to the juice, it is actually very good.

Did you check out the sites about pomegranates? The seeds are what's edible -- that's it. Only the seeds. Even though I should love them because they're common in my ethnic food heritage (awkward description, but you know what I mean, hopefully), I find them way more trouble than they're worth. Kids like them, though.

Here's a drink recipe which you can adapt by swapping agave nectar for the sugar:

Pomegranate Drink
Serves 4 to 6.

3 cups fresh pomegranate juice
1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon orange blossom water
sugar to taste
a pinch of salt
seltzer or water, to taste, and ice cubes

Combine everything in a blender, or mix well in a pitcher and serve with ice cubes.

From "Cooking the Middle Eastern Way" by Christine Osborne

Here's some basic information:

FROM JERRY M. PARSONS, Ph.D.
Professor and Horticulturist, Texas Cooperative Extension

If you have pomegranates in your yard, you'll want to juice some of them to make into punch or jelly or syrup.

The seeds and crimson pulp around them may also be added to fruit salad for a touch of color and flavor. Diners eat the pulp from the seeds and then discard the seeds on the side of the plate!

To extract the juice, separate and crush the edible portion of ripe pomegranates (do not remove seeds at this point). Place fruit in jelly cloth or bag and squeeze out the juice, or cut the fruit in quarters and juice with orange juicer, taking out the seeds.

Discard the seeds? How is that possible when eating by the spoonful? I eat ALL of the lil red buggers. Bo and I absolutely love pommies. Thing is, if you have children, best thing to do is peel and extract the fruit into a bowl as yes, they sometimes do pop out when opening and get all over the place.

IF you have a TJ's near you, they are now carrying them already peeled and packaged. When I did juice them, I just dropped the fruit into the juicer. It is one of the most luscious fruits one can possibly eat. They are rich in vitamins C, B6 and potassium.

If you are looking for a natural red stain for dying something, pommies will do it.

Peel and enjoy!!!!

Hi,
We love pomegrantes, now that they are in season, we can't stop eating them. When I found out that they help with free radicals and help to clean out blocked arteries, I stocked up. Now that I have been juicing them I walk better and my knees don't ache anymore. It seems that my bloodflow through my veins in my legs is smoother.
I can't go a day without my pomegranate juice. I have a juicer and I split open the pomegranate and take out the seeds and put them in the juicer and we drink up.
You will get use to the taste, it seems that the fruit is sweeter that the bottled juice and better for you.

Just call me JUICY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I first had one when I was very little and loved it.

My mom just opened it up, put the seeds on a plate and we ate them, kind of like eating seeds in raspberries, or blackberries, they aren't hard, you just chew them up, and that's it, they are so very delicious.

Anyway, my granddaughters love to eat seeds, so try to make a fun time out of eating them, they are great for you.

"Diners eat the pulp from the seeds and then discard the seeds on the side of the plate!"

Revvell -- I think what the writer was referring to was the "pith" in the seeds - that little hard part that's left after you chew up what s/he called the pulp -- the juicy, yummy part. Not the actual whole seeds themselves. Although the suggestion is a little odd since the entire seed can be chewed and swallowed including that little hard nib.

On public radio food talk show today, they suggested the way I've found to be the easiest way to open and separate the seeds - score the whole fruit, then submerge in a big container of water to separate the seeds from the sections -- the seeds will go to the bottom and the non-edible parts will float to the top. That way you can just skim or pull out the skin and partition things and, when you drain off the water, all the seeds are there -- all with no staining which can be somewhat of a drag.

Anyway, now's the season for them -- I hope everyone who loves them are enjoying them, and all who are new to them try them!!

I was surprised when I finally decided to try a pomegranite, cut it open and out crawled a rather scary looking tropical bug. Now I am afraid to try them. :(
Is this a common occurence with pomegranates?

Sweetgoddess, I have never opened any fruit and found any kind of bug,

I did cut into a potato once and found a worm. ICK

sweetgoddess, I got some basil with caterpillar eggs on them, I just washed them off and ate the basil anyway. The caterpillar eggs are a kind of confirmation, if you will, that it is organic.

Not so common yet shows the food is good. Sort of like with melons ~ I've been told they "should" have what looks like beestings which means they're ripe and juicy.

I see your point. It just freaked me out.
But if it is not so common, I will give it another go.
Thanks!

Not any more common than with any other fruit or vegetable ;) -- just maybe was a bit more offputting since it was a "strange" fruit to you ... kinda like sapotes or other fruit not commonly seen in some parts of the country.

RawTruth...what does it mean "to score the whole fruit?"Ya know -- where you cut (or score) lines down it so that the outside skin is cut through -- like you'd do to an orange, for instance.

Raw Truth, my sapote squished in my bag on the way home! sniffles. But I did get to eat one whole yummy one. Thank you. And yesterday I finished the last avacado that I picked. So cool! :)

I loved them as a kid!Very fond memories....
But now as a mom, I find them more trouble than they are worth unfortunately. Last year I got one for my kids to try and we got that red juice all over the place. Messy. Anything that envolves *more* cleaning and MORE stains
is NO in my book, LOL :p
But maybe I'll try it again with the method of scoring/peeling from this
thread.

So cool! :)I've been thinking of going back to that tree, but with a ladder in the back of my car -- hee, hee. It wouldn't be as much fun picking them without you, but, still ... free avos has gotta be a goooood thing! :p
