Have you ever used a Topsy Turvy planter to grow anything? I'm intrigued by the idea for strawberries.
What's your experience been?
TIA!

We made our own with a bucket. Much less expensive. Can make 2 or 3 for the price of one of those plastic things.

LOL! Hi Mel! I didn't know you were on here. ;-)

Ahhh! That's a good idea. I'm not at all super handy, but this is something I MAY be able to accomplish. LOL!

I used one. It gets extremely heavy when filled with dirt so make sure you have something very sturdy to hang it from. The plastic gets real brittle and starts breaking apart in about a year. I wasn't impressed with it.

Can google "Topsy Turvy made with buckets". We used a much smaller bucket; put herbs in the top and a hole in the bottom for strawberries and tomatoes to go through.

Is there a reason you WANT to do topsy turvy? They grow great in same bucket right side up. Stake and you'll have a lot easier plant to deal with. I've done both and right side up is far better IMPO.
If you only have hanging space, then it's way better than nothing.

I never tried one but my neighbor, an avid gardener, was not at all impressed and told me so. If he wasn't then I figured I would not be, either. I went with double walled large pots and my tomatoes are doing fantastic.

Cuz you can do two different types of plants. As I said, above, we did herbs, below we did tomatoes and strawberries. I agree, upright is better though.

Hmmmm...that says "gimmick," to me. Now that I think about it, no one I know uses them...I wonder why! LOL

Ummm...LOL...no. I think the biggest reason was because critters couldn't get the plant up high and the plant couldn't go crazy all over the garden.

If you want the most bang for your buck spacewise - do a search on here: Look at my new 3-D garden
---- and on the internet for barrel garden to see more pics. I did the 55 gal. barrel and it was awesome, but I also did 5 gal. pails with 15 pockets and it was great!!!!! And SO much easier to do than dealing with 1/2" thick barrel plastic!! COuld easily move around - and would work great for herbs on the side and tomato on top.
Sorry, if I knew how to link a search, I'd do it... one of these days I'll have to take some time and figure it out.

Do a search where? On this site? Just go to where it is, copy the URL in the browser and post it in your post. I don't even have a clue as to what to search for. :(
I looked at some barrel gardens. VERY creative, some of them. My honey always says he likes the barrels... although, we don't have any. lol

I gotta look into this barrel garden concept. I'm the sort of person who needs very clear visuals for tangible things. I can get esoteric concepts easily, but not something that requires logistics and materials. LOL!
I'm intrigued by this., that a friend linked on another site (Mel, you've seen it): (looks AWESOME for having fresh produce that I know is safe and non-GMO, etc, during cold months here in PA)
