Does anyone have any baby shower gift ideas that would be appropriate for a very healthy mom who plans to raise a close to raw baby?

I don't have a baby, but a good friend recently had a baby and said the best gifts she got were: organic cotton blankets/clothes and the baby bjorn, which is a sling thingy so she can wear the baby close to her heart all the time.
Hope that helps.
um, don't know if it's ok to plug my own business, if not, I'll gladly delete this... but I manufacture hemp baby products... If she plans on cloth diapering, I've got the best diapers available, but if not, I've got receiving blankets, wash cloths, burp cloths and a few other things... my site is www.BabyKicks.com. If you'd like to shop for my stuff and more, feel free to follow the link on the home page to the list of my many online retailers that have many more environmentally friendly baby products.

Kmik, how totally cool is that? WOW.
I'd also say, certificates to a day spa for the mom, with a day care certificate attached. either you could personally take care of her little one, or simply arrange for someone else to.
But, if I were going to do another baby, boy would that be something I'd want. LOL

We just had a baby and here are some of the best and most useful things we received: A sling (all natural hemp), a co-sleeper (bassinet type bed by arms reach), Cloth diapers and covers we have not had to use the extra absorbent inserts yet but they are great too, a breast pump (I have a few but I love the Medela Harmony manual one it works fast and needs no batteries or electric, and it really works great! Is also inexpensive) We also got a swing that swings in both directions, runs on batteries and keeps her happy when I cannot have her in the sling or hold her. A thermometer and a baby nail grooming kit. Blankets and sleep sacks. That is all I can think of off the top of my head. All our best to your friend and her new little one :)

Number one thing on my list would be a sling. I still sometimes use mine with my four year old! I used my first one for probably 5 years before it got too worn out and I replaced it. When I'm done with this one, I'm putting it away for the day I have grand kids. ;)

Oh DON'T delete it. I know some people think you shouldn't "advertise", but this type of website are things/supplies that people like us need info to!!!!!!
My grandson wears the cloth diapers like you sell. We LOVE them. It amazes me how many people cannot figure out what they are or how to change them - LOL!!!! It makes them ask questions and I was surprised to see one other family at our church (1,700 people attend each week) that used cloth diapers. I just can't believe that more don't use them. My grandson just turned 2, so many people have seen his diapers over the last 2 years, yet, only 1 other family, to my knowledge, wears them. The rest - disposalbles.
Anyway, we NEED links to supplies that you offer in order to continue to live a better and healthier life and that's what this board and Alissa's board is all about.

Queston on the Baby Slings . . . .
My grandson is 2 years old, 28 pounds. I find when I carry him a lot I get pain in my neck that goes into a headache. Do you think that the sling would help in this? Does more of the weight go on your shoulders? Or is the weight still pulling mostly on your neck?

I agree with Helen,
My youngest wore cloth diapers that I bought from the WAHM mall made by mama's like you. I loved cloth diapering and supporting other moms so they could stay at home with their children.
NONE of my friends did cloth with their babies; I felt like a leeper, LOL
I had the most beautiful diapers for him too, and lots of hemp ones too.
They are all packed away in the attic waiting for another baby to come someday, sigh...couldn't bear selling them yet.
back to this thread, great baby ideas for the earthy mama:
1st baby I assume?
The Baby Book by Dr. Sears (attachment parenting)
co-sleeper--expensive gift, but maybe a bunch of friends could get together
on this one) I LOVED MINE.
SLING**** I have a Maya wrap but there are lots of great ones
I also had a baby carrier (similar to a sling): the baby bjorn- which is nice too
breast pump (Medela's are wonderful)
organic baby clothes/layette/receiving blankets
organic baby towels/washclothes
natural baby products-shampoos, body washes, rash ointment (Whole Foods has a good selection)
cloth diapers & covers if she is inclined
both my boys *loved* their baby swings! good for when mama is doing
dishes/cooking where it isn't safe to carry baby in sling.

Helen,
When my son was between 1-2 years old I carried him on my hip with the sling.
How do you wear him? How long do you wear him for?
My neck was ok, but he was a lightweight kid.
Even at age 5 now he only weighs 34 pounds!
I could only use the sling till about 2-3 years because
he got very active and wouldn't want to stay put, LOL.
He still is a snuggle bug and likes to be close to me all the time though.
oops! I just reread your post Helen, and I misread it.
Well I think the info still applies though. No my neck did not hurt, but at that age he didn't want to stay in it for lengths of time. I think it would depend on the child since someone on here said they used a sling up to age 4-5.
I would definately stop carrying him alot if it is causing you pain/headaches.
I used a lightweight stroller when my alex got too fidgety for the sling.
The foldup lightweight strollers are nice at that age to take places without the bulk of the regular strollers.

Burt's Bees makes a whole line of baby ~Baby Bee~ products. You can look here at the descriptions and then pick them up at your local health food store. Long's drugs (here anyway) carries the line as well.

I love burtsbees products! Everyone would always comment on how nice my
baby smelled when we used these...smelled so good I would use their baby lotion too sometimes. Nice packaging too!
Some of their products do contain milk products though,
if that is a concern at all. My kids and I use their lipbalm daily (no dairy in it).

Well my four year old is only about 31 lbs. I only use it when he's tired and doesn't want to walk anymore, so he's not trying to get out of it.
A sling might well help, but different slings work for different people. The only thing I can think of where you might be able to see and try different ones out would be an LLL meeting. See if there's a group in your area and contact a leader to see if the Moms in the group use slings and try to get to a meeting. I know the Moms in our local group are all very willing to help others try on their slings and borrow a child to see what works and what doesn't. Some slings also allow you to slide them around on your back as an alternative.
Just want to interject... I'm glad to hear there's Cloth Diaper supporters here :-) It's funny, isn't it Punky, how it can get to be a bit of an addiction? You keep wanting to find the cutest, best diaper... and yeah, it's hard to part with them! My youngest has been potty trained for almost a year, but I still have her diapers  and I am NOT having any more babies!

Hi Punky & Cathy,
Thanks for posting back. What is a LLL meeting?
I do have the umbrella fold up stroller (which he normally doesn't like to ride in). When we are in the store he either rides in the shopping cart or wants to be held. Being held sometimes gets hard on me as I have degenerated discs in my neck (which I'm hoping by eating raw, they will rebuild, but until then . . . ). At Wild Oats I do see some moms with the slings. I did stop and talk to one. Maybe I'll talk to a few more and see what they say about how it sits on their shoulder/neck. I think it would just help a little if I had a little bit more help with the support and less strain on my neck.
Sounds like at 28 pounds, he's small enough to still be in one. I saw a lady at Wild oats and her son looked about 3 or a young 4 and she was carrying him in one.

Thanks Randolyn,
I was thinking Le Leche, but I couldn't come up with the 3rd L, so I thought it was something else.

Hi Sharon,
Talking to the Moms you meet with slings is a great idea. There is such a huge variety out there these days.
You can use this link to locate an LLL group in your area if you want to check that out:

Krista,
Oh my gosh. You have a diaper business? Um, I need to check out your website. :D
Are you by chance part of Diaperpin.com? I swear that I've heard that name before.
Oh, I should just PM you. Don't even know if you will see this! LOL
