View Full Version : Electrolyte Imbalance due to juicing?

Has anyone ever heard of this developing due to juicing?
I do not dilute my juices with water, and since I began juicing I developed a return of an arrhythmia that used to only occur after drinking too much alcohol.
Electrolyte imbalances can occur with too high or too low levels of potassium, magnesium, etc. I wonder if I am overdosing my body? I only drink about 32 ounces of green and/or red juices a day.
Thank you for your input.

You really will not know if you have an imbalance unless you have your blood tested and then you still will not know if it is due to the juicing.
Stop for a few days and see how you feel and then try it again.
It would be a shame to give up juicing if it is not the cause of your problem.

I feel for you jhodi, but what you go through must be much worse than the muscle cramps I get.
I've looked at my situation, in which I get cramps during the first couple days of a fast, as being more related to an imbalance existing before the fast and that the fast is helping correct it. Maybe buildup of lactic acid or other toxins in the muscle or other tissue because of impaired digestion/metabolism? Possibly due to storing minerals rather than absorbing and utilizing them?
What I do to resolve the cramps is take in salt with water, a little at a time until they go away. (I'm not suggesting you do that) Maybe that does speak to electrolyte imbalance, but for some reason I feel the imbalance is due to other excess stored minerals being pulled from tissue and brought back into the blood stream....seems to me that would throw off my electrolyte balance as well.
I used to fast years prior to my digestive problems. Back then I did not get muscle cramps when fasting like I have post leakygut/food allergies. That's another thing that I think for me, points to it being more related to poor digestion/absorption while eating and the storage of wastes, rather than caused by fasting. As well, I'll cramp at times during exertion at other times...it's not isolated to fasting.
This gives me something else to look into a solution for during the duration of this fast. I'm glad you brought it up and hope you find your answer.
jhodi, do you think you have any digestive problems? Some can cause you to produce your own alcohol and maybe as drinking did, it is triggering the arythmia. I think it may be poor digestoin of sugars/carbs that leads to making alcohol, I forget. That can damage the liver. (narc) Could juicing/juice fasting be detoxing the liver, releasing alcohol, triggering arythmia?
Has anyone ever heard of this developing due to juicing?

Are you, by any chance, including cilantro, chlorella, or highly-sulphurous foods in your daily juices, Jhodi? (sulphurous foods would include brassicas, leeks, onions, mustard family etc.)
I'd wait for your answer to the above, but since I do not intend to post here anymore, after today, I'll just point out to you that cilantro, chlorella and highly-sulphurous foods can 'loosen' heavy metal deposits in the body yet fail to properly excrete them (it's all to do with complex chemistry and so-called 'thiol' bonds). Suffice to say that, for example, antimony can impair utilization of magnesium by the bodys cells, one result of which can be cardiac arrythmia.
It's interesting that you mention that alcohol can bring upon you these arrythmia symptoms, too, which might just possibly imply some impediment of your liver functioning. Heavy metals such as mercury or copper can impair liver function, but so can a number of other things. The point is that it would be worth your consulting with a qualified doctor to try to find out if there might be some real link between alcohol consumption and arrythmia, perhaps similar to that which I have hypothesised.
I've discussed heavy metal issues in a couple of other posts today, so if you feel inclined to pursue some personal research on the matter, you can find some pointers to more information in those earlier posts.
Please bear in mind that I'm only mentioning the above as an alternative thing to consider, instead of electrolytes. If you are not using cilantro or chlorella, then the above might not be relevant, but who knows...
I've not looked into it, but some claim that wheatgrass juice chelates some heavy metals. This may or may not be true but it's just another thing to consider.
As I said, I'm offering you the above without the benefit of your initial feedback, so I'm going out on a limb with all this ;)
Whatever the case, I wish you the best of health.
Have a nice life.

Arky and Street Surfer, thank you for your kind reply. My juices are heavily kale, spinach, cucumber, celery, apple, based. I will do some further research on the info you provided. And thank you.
