I will be taking a cruise in June and am trying to figure out how to stay raw. I was told I could NOT bring any appliances (so no Tribest). I plan on doing the buffet not the sit down dinners. This is my first cruise (going from NY to Nova Scotia) and I just don't know how to handle it. Any suggestions welcome.

My boss did this last summer when we went on a company cruise. He brought a lot of things with him. Not sure if he had a fridge in his room or what, but he was able to make it work.

Lots of veggies on cruises, don't worry! And don't be shy about asking for specific foods as well. I know you said you'll be going to the buffet, but in the dining room they can probably accomodate you dietary/raw needs more easily.
Happy Cruising!!

I don't know anything about cruising. My sister said we would be eating buffet. What is different about the dining room? Do I have to get all dressed up?

Cruise lines are very into making your experience good. You could probably even do the sit-down dinners and just tell your waiter what you can eat. And once they get to know you over the course of a cruise, they'll be happy to go out of their way to please you. They thrive on their tips, so they're very customer oriented. :-)

You should check your documents - you probably have one or two sit down meals in the evening if you do the dining room.

In the dining room you often will sit with another group of people at a bigger table. Depending on the cruise line you may have more or less options in the buffet. On my last cruise there were tons of fruit options for breakfast in the buffet. There was also a smaller dining area (on Celebrity) with "Spa Cuisine" which would probably work nicely for you - most was raw. That said, you really could make the dining room work if you want to as well. I was not raw on my last cruise, but I ordered several items off menu and they accomodated me happily.

I worked on Holland America Line ships for about a year, eating raw part of that time. Here's what I found useful:

Dinner is typically the meal with the least choices for a raw food eater. Usually prepared fruit (often had a sauce of some sort on it) and salad bar were my options. Lunch and breakfast were great. If there's a taco-themed lunch bar, go there for the guacamole (usually from frozen, but hey, you might need it!)

tribest personal blender for trips over 2 weeks. Added variety: banana + ice + water + nut butter = milkshake

Salad bar will have typical stuff, usually sliced/chopped small: lettuces, tomato, olives, olive oil, vinegars, raisins, sunflower seeds, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, celery, etc. Pick up lemon wedges at the drinks station

Fruit available at every meal. Breakfast and lunch: Sliced melon, pineapple, whole apples, oranges, bananas, pears, avocados. Dinner will usually be a fruit cup. Get whole fruit on day one and save it til it's ripe. Get apples at lunch for a midnight snack--you get the idea (i.e. PLAN AHEAD!) Occasionally mangoes or papaya will be available, but they may not be ripe on your itinerary.

Take your own EVOO, sea salt or trocomare, 8 oz homemade nut butter, nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, flax crackers, chocolate treats. Easy breakfast: fruit topped with sunflower, hemp, pumpkin seeds, and coconut.

If you're desperate for something, you can usually find a market in port. Keep in mind that you might rather be on an excursion, sight seeing, than trying to do your grocery shopping!

You're welcome to email me if you like.

Sprouts2go, (and all)

How was your cruise? My family and I are going on a four-day cruise and wanted to know your experience. Do you think you could've "snuck" your Tribest blender on board? What about water? Well, I'm going to call my cruiseline - Royal Carib tomorrow to see what else they have to say too.

Would love to hear your experience. Am bringing my nine y.o. b/g twins and dh.
