I had raw mushrooms for dinner the other night: maitake, shitake, and oyster. Afterward, a friend told me that raw shitakes can make you ill... but I didn't feel ill after eating them. Even so, I will probably research it online before eating them again.

There's a thread or two around here about mushrooms. I think it's about Gabriel Cousens or another Raw food guru, that advises against eating mushrooms period.
I rarely ate mushrooms before becoming Raw, but love them now - tried a few marinated Portabellos and I fell in love. :eat
Since reviewing that thread I mentioned, I have second thoughts. I used to eat Portabellos, every week, but I haven't since then.

I personally LOVE shrooms!!!! Alissa has some FABULOUS recipes using them! Her Stuffed Portobella recipe is ALWAYS a HUGE hit when I have classes!!!!
Recently I have made Lobster Mushrooms and found them to be VERY tastey!!! I don't know about studies on them...I've heard things, but they don't bother me at all... I know Revvell doesn't like them, but I think that it's because of the taste, but I could be wrong about that. For me, I could live without them if I absolutely *had* to, but I'm glad I don't have to!!!

I don't care for the taste of any raw mushroom but dehydrated they are great and so is the mushroom soup.

I like raw mushrooms in a few more gourmet like recipes, not so much plain though.

I haven't been able to eat shrooms after I read in Dr. Andrew Weil's book that raw mushrooms are toxic. A bit sad, actually, because mushrooms were what helped stay vegetarian when I first started because they're so hearty. But luckily there is so much else for me to eat...

I have always enjoyed raw mushrooms over cooked mushrooms (when eating sad), but now that I have been raw for a bit of time, my taste for mushrooms has disappeared. Kindof odd.
Here's a silly question (maybe because I just woke up and am still half asleep...) Do wild animals eat mushrooms? Can't recollect if i've ever seen a wildlife show or read a book about them foraging for mushrooms like humans do.:wuv
oh wait actually i do remember in The Chipmunks Adventure, Alvin and Simon looking for mushrooms in the forest after getting caught by the crazy natives! (does that count?)

BlackKat, Too funny about the Chipmunks.
Pigs and dogs help find truffles (the king of mushrooms) and I've read that pigs will eat them if not pulled back in time for the individual to finish unearthing.
I have always enjoyed them raw on salads. No harm yet.
I do enjoy portabellas marinated and put in wraps and other stuff much more than just sliced plain. I also love the pesto stuffed ones but don't do them often.
One of the cravings I had and kind of burnt out on was the eggless egg salad stuffed in mushrooms. Ate two batches and have not yet gotten the urge to make again.

I like marinated mushrooms much better than raw... it's a texture/taste thing for me. I find they sometimes taste a bit like "dirt" when eating big pieces of raw - not so when marinated.

Hi,
Animals do eat mushrooms in the wild, there great for recycling nutrients. They have lots of B vitamin in it which is a great natural source, instead of yeast. I actually used to hate all forms of mushrooms before i became vegan, but since going vegan a year ago i can't get enough. They taste so good to me, weird lol. I figure its just my body's way of getting B vitamins. I've never personally had bad reactions to eating mushrooms, but im sure people more sensitive to yeast and mold might.

Mushroom has also vitamin D especially shikiita mushroom (Not sure the spelling)
I crave mushroom on winter. Summer i tend not to eat them.
I just listen to my body not to fear. I have open mind of what people says, i take and leave and try to see what works for me.
All the best!

I do marinated criminis 2-3 times a week. I always buy large quantity of criminis and use some for salads, some for pates, and then marinate the rest.
Cousens does write in Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine (which I read and very much enjoyed) that raw mushrooms leave spores in the body that can cause problems. I don't have the book right here to reference, but when I read that passage, I said, "I'm sorry, but I can only give up so much at a time, and if I'm going to go raw, I'm going to eat mushrooms."

"Edible mushrooms are another common food that is highly mycotic. Mushrooms are acid forming and full of mycotoxins. All contain various levels of amanitin. Some are immediately poisonous and others with lower concentrations may cause slower-moving chronic disease. One cancer resercher, Dr. B. Toth, found that the mycotoxins in mushrooms were associated with cancer in the lungs, liver, thyroid, nasal cavity, stomach, colon, and gallbladder in mice. According to Sick and Tired, all mushrooms contain minimum of five active ingredients that have been shown to cause cancer in animals" - Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine, Gabriel Cousens, MD
