Hello Everybody,
I'm new to the Raw Vegan Lifestyle and I got a lot of Information from this Forum (mostly via Searching),but I didnt find anything for my Question.

I live in germany (thats why my English isnt that good) and Coconuts are pretty expensive, especially for my low budget.
So I thought about buying organic grated Coconut, but in my local store they dont have raw grated coconut.they only have grated coconut, which is dried at 80°-100°C (approx. 180°-210°F) in the oven.
I found only 1 Source on the internet that sells Raw grated coconut, buts its 50% more expensive+shipping costs.

I'd like to add coconut to my diet (mostly bc of its taste, but also bc of the fat, since I am pretty skinny)

What kind of advice would you give me?buy it even if its not raw anymore?

P.S.:I already have other fat sources in my diet like seeds, nuts, several oils.

It's my understanding from what I've learned, that the organic grated/shredded coconut we buy here in the US has the fat removed already since it's the press cake leftover from extracting coconut oil. Which is why it doesn't go rancid...

What about adding coconut oil to your diet? *Ü*

thanks for the quick reply.
I can add coconutoil to my diet, alternating with the other oils.

but I'd like to use shredded/grated coconuts either for cereals or smoothies so I cant use coconut oil for that.

here in germany we have shredded coconut with all the fat inside (around 60%).
they make it out of the coconut meat.so its no leftovers.

but its dried at 80°C-100°C .so should I go for it?

We are not suppose to promote the eating of non-raw food on this forum. But for what it is worth I use shredded coconut in my diet and it is not "raw," I enjoy the taste and texture. Raw coconut shavings are too expensive and not easily available for me either. And don't feel that I am messing up my raw diet by adding this small amount of coconut that I use, mostly in my raw granola, and a few deserts.

But I do use coconut oil in my smoothies and LOVE it. It adds a great tropical taste to my smoothies.

I will buy tomorrow coconut oil and that grated coconut meat.(not raw)
of course I would like to eat fresh coconuts, but its not possible (budget wise).
Eventually I will try to get the raw coconut shavings.

If you are starting with your raw journey, don't worry and do what is comfortable for you.

Hopefully you will be able to eat tone of young coconut as you like.

I am sure you can find some raw movement in your area, i recalled someone from Germany mentionning this.

The other option, would be to find other people that are into organic produce and you could order them by big quantity. You could get a grocer number etc... These are trick that family do sometime, they stick together and order their food on line, they save a lot.

If you have any Asian market in your area, you can ask them to carry this. You can even ask the place you will buy this coconut to carry them. All you need to do, is to keep asking.

Congratulations with your raw journey

thank you Raw Angel Mom,
I will definately find some people I can share my experiences with.

here is an asian market, but I'm not sure about the quality of the coconuts.
I will check it out in the next days and gain some information about their quality

I am unable to purchase raw, finely shredded coconut locally. I can, however, find larger pieces of shredded coconut (they are more like coconut chips). I simply take these raw coconut chips and chop them up with a little hand held chopper to make it into the fine, shredded coconut. This is just an idea -- maybe you can find bigger pieces of raw coconut and shred it yourself?

Yes,I also searched for coconut chips few days ago,but they were also more expensive (than shredded coconut) or not raw.
Coincidentally I found yesterday an Internet Shop where I can buy these raw Organic Coconut Chips for the same price as the shredded Coconut shavings and I can buy there also dried organic fruits & Nuts relatively cheap. :excited:
