hi all,
raw food newbie here. i couldn't find definitive info on this, so i'm hoping some of you could help me out. i went to the store today and was quite confused about which items would be considered raw outside of the produce aisle. if the items below don't specifically have "raw" written on them, do they still tend to be raw?
- olive oil and other oils
- soy sauce and tamari
- pumpkin seeds (are they toasted by default?)
- tahini
- bee pollen
- dates
there were some others, but i can't think of them at the moment.
thanks!

Tahini can be made from either sesame seeds or ROASTED sesame seeds. Look out for the ones that don't mention ROASTED sesame seeds in the ingredients.

even if tahini only says sesame seeds on the label, it can be roasted, as they arent required to list roasted in the ingredients. ive been buying one that says ONLY sesame seeds on the label, does not say on the jar anywhere that they are roasted, but then the website says they are roasted. the only raw tahini i know of is artisana, maybe ? living tree i think, and there is one in the refrigerator case i forget the brand but even that one tells you that the seeds are dried at high temperatures and that also during processing the friction heats the stuff up.
i have had no luck finding an affordable, truly raw, available tahini
i try to make it myself and it comes out horrid and bitter
bleh. i LOVE tahini but i cant seem to find a good way to get it raw and tasty and affordable :(
also, cold pressed olive oil doesnt necessarily mean raw as far as im aware. i believe the pressing temps can go above 118F, and some companies also misrepresent :( you really need to check with the company...there was one i used to pay more money for at WF becasue it said it was pressed below 98F, but then when someone contacted the company they found out that it was also heated before or after to a non-raw temperature, so the fact it was pressed below 98 is irrelevant.
i dont stress too much over these things because its not worth the hassle to me and i often find that raw products just arent available in ireland or italy where I am, and it can be difficult even in the states where they may be available but unaffordable.

You got the right information already.
Good questions, just to add more of what was said
- olive oil and other oils (If it says cold press, yes this is)
- soy sauce and tamari (No, nama shoyu is. It has to say NAMA)
- pumpkin seeds (are they toasted by default?) (You need to be careful, it has to say at least raw on the package. You can contact the company. There is this law that allow company to say raw if it was only pasteurize. As soon a nut is pasteurize it isn't raw anymore. For sure almond from the state aren't raw)
- tahini (Same as my response about, it must say at least RAW)
- bee pollen (Yes)
- dates (Yes)

Hi - I have some others to add to the list - I am pretty sure that none of these are actually raw and am wondering why they are included in a raw diet (not that I'm complaining, just wondering :) )
- nutritional yeast
- braggs amino acid
- vinegar (apple cider, ume plum)
- dijon mustard (store bought)
- miso
Also, do you know if WH shredded coconut flakes are raw? What about dried spices and herbs?
Thanks!
