Hey I live on the west coast of BC.
Watching the news I'm worried that some of the radiation from the explosion at Fukushima's fallout is going to reach the west coast all the way down to California!
Just wondering if anyone is taking a kelp or iodine supplement or some other types of protection against radiation exposure....

not for that reason... but i take kelp powder in my juice daily.

Hey Aleesha
You're on the West Coast.
What have you heard or read about the radiation explosion in Japan?

I've heard governments have told suppliers to stop selling Iodine supplements. I've been to the stores and they have sold out of Iodine and kelp supplements!
This kinda worries me that it could be worst then what Stephen Harper has recently said which is, not to worry it won't hit us!

I bought 4 pounds of kelp and I'm thinking of buying more. I also bought some potassium iodine but I'm not going to use it until they say it's needed. It has side effects:

Drugs.com (http://www.drugs.com/sfx/potassium-iodide-side-effects.html)
Mayo Clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR601129/DSECTION=side-effects)

Kelp is much better for everyday use (http://mind-mart.com/holistic-health/sea-herbs-and-vegetables)
"Seaweed has the unique ability to remove radioactivity from the body. At both Nagasaki and Chernobyl, seaweed (kelp) was used extensively to remove radiation from people and the environment. Seaweed contains a natural salt–sodium alginate–that binds with toxins such as radiation, mercury, or pharmaceuticals, and transforms them so the body can eliminate them as harmless salts in the urine."

This is all very interesting. Today I have seen quite a few different references about iodine and the radiation from Japan. I bought kelp & dulse granules last week. I'm on the east coast of the US, does anyone know how high our leves will get? I am assuming this will travel round the world?

i don't subscribe to fear. if it happens... then i'll deal with it. but i don't waste my energy worrying about stuff.

instead i hold the space for light and love... and true health.

(obviously i don't watch the news either... too negative. my hubby and/or friends let me know if there's something important i need to be concerned with otherwise i am blissfully unaware!)

Nice good to hear someone else is thinking along the same lines!
We don't have potassium Iodide but it would definitely be a good idea to have it on hand just in case. My BF and I are going to head east if/when it hits. There's no way to tell yet how much there is going to be yet because the reactors are still leaking. They have pulled the workers away from the site. So until people do something its going to continually leak and get worst... A disaster like this affects all of us.

Nothing wrong with being precautious and adding more kelp to our diets. Another good metal detoxifier is chlorella and also ginseng apparently is good as well.

Ive been following the disaster news from day one and it is not looking good at all. Here's a few quotes from an article:
"The upshot of his assessment of the situation is that the Fukushima power plant is now a “dirty bomb” waiting to happen. And it’s on fire right now. Radiation levels are rising so rapidly that it’s not even safe to work near the plant. This is very rapidly headed into a situation where suicidal volunteers are going to have to “rush in” and do some work on the plant, spend only a few minutes there, then evacuate as quickly as possible. And they’ll still get cancer."
"By December 1986 a large concrete sarcophagus had been erected, to seal off the reactor and its contents. Many of the vehicles used by the “liquidators” remain parked in a field in the Chernobyl area to this day, most giving off doses of 10-30 R/h (0.7-2 uA/kg) over 25 years after the disaster.”

Stay healthy and prepared!

I found some sites that moniter radiation levels. The radiation network (http://www.radiationnetwork.com/), which is private people with geiger counters around the US who are monitering levels and a site that moniters radiation levels around the Seabrook Plant (http://home.comcast.net/~sonomasoft/map.htm) in Missouri.

I also found a list of articles about people leaving Japan and it also shows the jet stream forcast (http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/27-signs-that-the-nuclear-crisis-in-japan-is-much-worse-than-either-the-mainstream-media-or-the-japanese-government-have-been-telling-us) for the next few days.

How Far Can Radiation Travel? (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/03/16/956971/-How-Far-Can-Radiation-Travel-(History-Sheds-Some-Light)-UPDATED) Totally facinating, it reports on declassified info from nuclear testing. 1963 was the worst year for fallout because of the ban on nuclear testing which went into effect. So in the last months before the ban went into effect the US and USSR were testing daily.

Quote: "Atomic fallout easily enters the jetstream because of the power of each explosion. My understanding is that the reactors in Japan cannot explode with that kind of force, which minimizes the possibility of interaction with global jetstreams. However, I have not yet seen anyone discussing it from that angle."

This is being discussed daily at our home since my husband is in the Nuclear Power Industry and has been for almost 40 years. He recommended that I share this site, NEI (http://www.nei.org/) Nuclear Energy Institute. This is the site where he, coworkers and all plant personnel go when they hear something on the media to see if it's actually true or not.

My husband is disgusted with the partial truths and sensationalizism being reported by the media - hence the recommendation of the above site if you're interested. I hope you find it beneficial. *Ü*

Everything in the seaweed/algae category is becoming extinct. Many companies are either not selling products or are selling in limited quantity (I've already had a couple of products pulled so far). When they will finally be available, they'll be expensive. It's really unfortunate everything that is happening with food. We just have to do the best we can and if you're able to stock up, great. Most of us are pretty lucky to not be in Japan at least, though it is affecting everywhere to some degree.

Hey thanks for sharing those sites, good information. Its definitely confusing and hard to know who to trust, who has the right info... The more info we can get the better way we can investigate ourselves!

Here's another radiation site: http://www.blackcatsystems.com/RadMap/map.html

Here's a map of where the radiation could be heading for the next few days...

Thank you to everyone who took time to post sites! The information is very valuable! This is not something we can throw our arms up and be ignorant to! Great info!

Sea vegetables are cheap! Well where i get them they are. I live on the west coast and instead of ordering them online, head to your nearest asian grocery store. Thats where i get mine and they almost always hav it in stock! Theres no way the seaweed/algae category is becoming extinct. Without it, life in the ocean wouldn't exist!

That's what works for me too. I've had my bf going crazy about the radiation from Japan. Worry has got to be bad for his health and the radiation may never be a big issue here.

I listen to news on the radio occasionally but not tv. I don't have one

I take an iodine/folic acid supplement daily it is more then neccesary today to take iodine, everyone should be taking it, It has the ability to neutralize harmful chemicals in water mainly fluoride which is a toxic poison which's original purpurse was to kill rats. It is neccesary for thyroid function and basicaly every function of the entire body iodine deficiency is said to be the most common cause of mental retardation and it is estimated that 96% of the world has a iodine deficiency radiation or not i would highly reccomend getting some form of iodine in your diet. Peace.
