View Full Version : Drinking Wheatgrass while stile eating SAD

Hello,
I have a question but don't know if this is the best place to ask. If it's not would someone please point me in the right direction. I am growing wheatgrass and juicing it every morning but still eating largely a SAD diet. Unfortunately I can't afford to eat much raw. Should I continue to drink wheatgrass juice even though I'm still eating beans and rice (or worse) for dinner? I'm afraid I might be doing more harm then good. Like cleaning out the mucus only to eat the food that my body produced the mucus to protect against.
I'd really appreciate some help with this question.

Nothing you do to improve your diet or lifestyle will do more harm than good.
Drink it... drink it... it's good for you!

Ditto. Your question is like asking ~ I'm eating mostly a SAD ~ should I not eat fresh fruit?

That's good news indeed. I was worried because wheatgrass juice makes me feel so sick. I've heard it's because I'm detoxing, I just needed some reassurance. I'm in pretty poor health, I don't want to make thing worse.

if you don't want to make things worse... then why don't you stop putting wheat and refined sugar into your body? that's a GREAT first step to health!

I don't eat much refined sugar, don't like eating it. I was addicted to it most of my childhood. Don't want to touch sugar again. I do eat a lot of wheat. If needed I could switch almost completely to rice. Would it be silly to give up wheat but not corn? Popcorn is a large part of my diet because it's so cheap yet still whole grain. If you haven't guessed I'm kind of poor. After rent and other bills I have about $50 a week for food. If it wasn't for money I'd be 100% raw. I even tried sprouting once to save money. My sprouts made me sick :(
Thank you for answering my questions. I understand these forums aren't intended as a place to talk about cooked food. I appreciate that you're indulging me.

This is wonderful that you are making the room for the good stuff. Your effort aren't in vaine. Maybe in time you will figure out a way to eat more raw with the cost of pennies.
ALL the best!

What kind of sick did your sprouts make you? Are you sure they weren't kicking you into detox? I wouldn't give up too quickly on sprouts unless it was from them getting moldy, then you just need to come up with a different way to sprout. Maybe it was from what you sprouted? Getting organic seeds makes sure the seeds weren't pretreated with pesticides or herbicides. Certain kinds of beans have toxic sprouts.
There are some good sprout people here a few forums down you might want to check out. :eat I know how hard it is to be raw and not have much money for it.

A thought about some cheap rawness:
-Bananas are super. They are filling, easy to work meals around, yummy, and cheap! If you get 4-5 bananas for a dollar, and make them into a smoothie with, say, half a bunch of kale, that's a nice meal for $1.50. Not too shabby!
-sprouts are also awesome. They cost pennies as sprouting seeds, but grow into nutritionally dense baby plantlets with a little bit of sprouting effort. In fact, back in the old sea-faring days when seamen would suffer from scurvy, it was discovered that taking along sprouting seeds would prevent this from happening; sprouts are so healthy!

check out any co-ops in your area - they exchange work for discounts on food. HFS or farms
the economy hit hard here, so many well established working people are now getting fruit/veggies from the food bank.
be sure to check out the coupons wither on line or in sunday newspaper.
there are always sales on something that you can revolve a raw meal around.
if you are friendly with people at work or friends in your circle, perhaps you can share the cost of more expensive items such as detergent, etc that all seem to runout at the same time.
And if you are a church person, speak to your ....... . and of course pray, it's amazing what the universe will bring to you!

Raw can definitely be cheap and affordable even on $50 a week. You can buy a lot of thick skinned fruits(bananas, oranges, pineapples, etc) in conventional to cut costs but others that are high on the pesticide lists in organic. Also a website I found that may help for someone starting raw on a budget that shows how to prepare cheap raw meals:

If you have the ability starting a small garden with buckets or something would be beneficial. It doesn't cost much to get started and if maintained properly you'd have a lot of vegetables to incorporate into your diet.

I have less than 50$ a week to spend on food and I manage quite well.
when i can, i buy more, but usually, i can buy a lot for cheap.
(Im in ontario, so i also try to buy local)
organic carrots (5 lbs for 4.00)
organic beets (5lbs for 4.00)
organic celery (1.29 for a big bunch)
organic sweet potato
onion (local and very cheap)
organic garlic (local and cheap)
organic ginger (so cheap, and so good for you)
organic apples (today i got 9 for 2.00. on the sale rack because they were getting too ripe. perfect for me though, especially since im making juice with them)
bananas (.59 a lb)
oranges (I always buy the ones on the sale rack: 6 for a 1.00)
grapefruits (3 for 1.00)
lemons (5 for 1.00)
dates (organic ontario dates. i get at least a quart for 4.00)
raisins (organic, local and really cheap)
organic sprouts (so cheap for so many and make them myself. brocoli, sunflower and fennugreek and good choices)
organic flax seeds are really cheap. do you have a dehydrator? you can make lovely sweet potato flax bread for way cheap and its very satisfying/filling.
this is what i usually buy. sometimes i splurge on Nori wraps, almonds, pineapple, plums, but i always splurge on organic spinach or dandelion greens and basil and parsley and/or some other greens.
hope this gives you an idea. this grocery lists, with a sufficient quantity of each item + a few extras here and there (like cinnamon, almonds, cranberries...) adds up to about 40$. Then i'll spend a bit more here and there, buying more bananas and 1.00 items from the sale rack, which is such a great place when you like to make smoothies and juices.
one day, I got a bag of like 20 mangos for 2.00. I felt like i was dreaming. I still have tons in the freezer for making smoothies with. :)
EDIT:
agree with above comment. growing your own is the cheapest way to go, and the healthiest. and its fun too!
I grow my own sprouts, chamomile, and lavender and goji berries (experimenting with the goji berries) right now. and will grow more when it warms up a bit. and when i get more soil for my indoor pots.

Hi Drunkgamer (loveeeet!),
I've done raw on a strict budget, even worse than I am at the monent. It takes a bit of organisation, but you can increase gradually the amount of raw in your diet.
I used to (and am strating the practice up again) go to the markets just before closing time to get the best deals, things like a box of toatoes for $1, bags of on specials fruit and veg for $1-$2 a kilo and other great bargains.
Last week I bought some bananas (about ten), apples (maybe ten as well), 4 ears of corn and some tomatoes for about $11. All on special!
Growing your own wheatgrass is a great start, and it will taste awful if you are eating SAd and/or new to raw (the taste got better for me the more raw I went over quite a long time).
Stick around this board, you'll get plenty of help and support on how to increase your raw foods intake on a strict budget! GOOD LUCK and I hope you start healing your ailments soon!

something else that we did for a few months last fall/winter was...
my hubby was out of work and we had no money coming in so we went to our local market and explained the situation. they allowed us to 'shop' from the bin they send to the soup kitchen. we got tomatoes, carrots, peppers... greens... cucumbers... whatever they were sending off that day. i'd go in once a week - get a huge box of stuff and juice off it for the week. i'd make a huge pot of soup for my family and we were set.
the kindness of others is there... we only need to reach out and ask for it

Keep drinking it even eating SAD wheatgrass is great for the body. Once summer comes you can start eating more raw fruits since they will be cheaper.

Wow those are some good ideas. I'm still drinking the wheatgrass, on my 4th day now. It's been kind of hard to keep going. I never know if I'll be drinking more the next day. Drinking just a single ounce puts me into a different head space all day. Sometimes I feel better then normal while other times I feel like everything is a little too bright. I'm also losing weight scary quickly. My friend told me I maybe to skinny.
Anyways. I'm starting a garden this spring. In fact, I should have started the seeds indoors a week ago, I need to get on that. Thank you again for all your encouragement.
