Hey everyone! I've recently started thinking and changing my lifestyle for a more healthy one. Watching what i eat, working out, etc ... i must confess i'm not 100% raw, but this forum really helps me out with nutritional information and such which is really doing wonders for me.
My question is in regard to Grains. In Canada, we have something called the Canada Food Guide, basically something we can use to tell us how much Veg and Fruit we should consume a day, Grains, Milk or Alternative .. etc etc ...
In the food guide it says we should get 8-10 servings of fruits and veggies a day. Very easy for me with green smoothies, salads and raw fruit that i consume. The interesting one for me is the 8 servings of Grains per day ...
What do you guys feel about this and how do you go about getting 8 servings of grains in your diet per day from a raw vegan standpoint.
Thanks so much for your help and take care !!

you shouldn't have any grains at all. in US we have the same guide. it is a political thing and has noting to do with health. according to the government we should also have fluoride in our water and mercury in our teeth. just forget about it.
on a side note never trust the government - EVER.
you can read my article on American Health care here:

and i'm sure Canadian is similar because we own Canada and force you to pass the laws we want you to pass.
I was surprised when my doctor told me that no one should be eating grains - all they do is make us fat. (I don't believe he was talking about quinoa, amaranth, millet, etc. though)
Once in a great while (maybe twice a year) I make some granola with oatmeal in it, otherwise I don't eat grains any longer, except for some of the ones I mentioned above.

The Canada Food Guide is sponsored by the Dairy and Agricultural companies. My friend has a favourite story of sitting in elementary school, being taught to drink more milk as per the food guide, and then later noticing the fine print at the bottom, 'sponsored by the Dairy [corporation] of Canada'. She put two and two together (or is the saying 'one and one'?) and realized why dairy has been pushed so much!
Grains are not necessary for human health; in fact, through what I've learned (with non-Agricultural-sponsored studies!), grains are not healthy for us. They apparently contain opiates which are addictive, and have changed a lot from before they started being cultivated and hybridized by humans.
So, I ignore the Canada Food Guide now. It has no real use to me as a raw vegan! As long as you're eating enough food, you're satisfying all the 'criteria' anyway.

Hello, i haven't read other reply so sorry if i repeat from other's information.
I am from Canada too and when i became a mom, i start to have concerns as well with portion of this, portion of that to meet the daily requirement. You know after observing my child and my own body, i don't feel that our body works quite this way. It definitely store nutrients. Some day, you may crave mainly mango, other cilantro, etc....
I wouldn't worry about the daily requirement, to tell you the truth, i am not even sure that we need that much grain if any at all. Everyone is different and you will need to find your own compass for your body.
Keep in mind that those food charts or requirement first got spouncer by the dairy farm association. The way the government is structure or mentally seem to be incline is to support the big corporation versus what is right for the human body. If you think about it, aspartam is allow in food, MSG is allowed, food coloring is allowed. Chloramine is approved in our water system. Certain amount of pollutions is allowed in our water. Certain amount of rat residues is allow in food industry. Some reglementation is made so it is still safe according to their guideline but not too much nuisance for the cooperation profit. It is possible to produce also a pure vaccine 100% safe for the children but some toxic substance are allowed as long it doesn't exceed a certain amount. If you think about it, this is totally insane and we need to discern, take and leave and mainly to figure out what is truly right and 100% safe for us and our family.
Take and leave this this food chart and don't see it as a bible. I know raw food is so different and not much research have been done. Most research as based with someone eating SAD food.
I wouldn't worry about this and just worry about finding a way to feel free and happy with this life style. In time, you will find what works for you.
If you really want to have a reference, thankfully, they came up with a chart for vegan. You can find it on this site. If you tolerate fruits, you can try about 50% leafy greens, 40 % fruits and the rest nut/seed/ supplement. You may find that you need more fat or whatever is good for you.
Your body is wise and it will guide you.
Have fun with this journey.
p.s I am not a health professional but someone that love to read and experiment for myself. You need to do your own research

You called them seeds and that is what they are - not grains. Same with quinoa.
