I keep seeing people say this, but I tried to research it by googling and didn't really come up with anything. Where are you guys finding the research that backs this up?
Just curious.......thanks

okay... monounsaturated fats are the ones that assist with weight release.
avocados, nuts (almonds, brazil nuts and cashew), olive oil, pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds are high in them.
According to this article (http://www.ehow.com/about_5438439_monounsaturated-fats-weight-loss.html) consuming monounsaturated fats can prevent central body fat distribution. They can also increase the overall amount of fat that your body burns.

Thank you that was a very interesting article. I was surprised that they ate a diet of 40% fat (the good kind) a day and lost weight. Wow raw foods!

I wish I had kept all the resource info to share with you but I just learned it from various sources and then implemented. What I can say through personal experience is that it works. :)

My experience backs it up ;)
When I went 100% raw I ate large amounts of nuts, seeds, avos and oils.. few months later .. 20 pounds disappeared off my body..

This may seem a silly question, but I cant find any info that addresses if MUFAs are more water soluble than other fats.
In laundry I know you can use a water soluble oil to help cut and remove oils that are not water soluble. Would I be correct in saying that good fats help us lose weight because they are more water soluble and cut the bad fats which are not? I've not delved into the fats issue very much. I am learning though, thanks to the good folks here.

So it took you a few months? How many is a few? My weight loss has been very very slow going, but I only have about 10 that I want to lose. I'm thinking the less you have the longer it takes to get it off?
I had started to cut back on nuts and things, because I love them so much and can easily make a meal off them alone, but now I am just enjoying them.

It took around 3-4 months I think, its been a few years now...:wuv
Ya I think it depends on where you are at, if your closer to your 'natural weight' (I think those height and weight charts are a little off)
I've plateaued, stayed at the same weight for years now. I'm wanting to bring my body fat % down a tad. I dont focus on weight specifically, I'm sure it would be a around 5 pounds but instead of just wanting to lose the fat I also want to gain muscle but in order for me to do this I focus on keeping my fat intake lower than what I was doing before, portion size and bring my work outs to a more intense level.
So if you are closer to that 'natural weight' then you might have to take your diet and workout to the next 'level' whatever that might be for you...
Hope that helps.

Not sure what you're talking about. I didnt say 'good fat' you mean "healthy fat"?
I do list where I was getting my fat. "nuts, seeds, avos and oils.."
I forgot to mention coconut mmmmmm :throwhearts:

Yes that does help. I had been at the same weight for years before I had my 3 kids and now after, the same weight. I started exercising and pretty much immediately gain 4 lbs. This really bothered me...I know muscle weights more then fat...I know, but what can I say, I can be a bit weight obsessed. Anyway, a couple of months after that is when I went raw, or mostly raw. It took me over a month to get back to my regular weight and now I am just slightly under that weight after over 2 months. So I am happy about where I am at, and the progress, it was just slower then I thought it would be. For a while I cut back on my nuts and such, but then kept hearing about good fat to help get rid of bad, hence this thread. So I quit restricting myself and just ate what felt right.
Like you though, I would like to lower my body fat %, I just have to learn to stay off my scale and just go by how I feel. My meals are mostly fruit in the morning and a green smoothie, lunch is some kind of veggies sandwich type or salad and then I will eat, sometimes a lot, of nuts (I made raw granola that has almonds, pecans, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flax, millet and sunflowers in it) I love this stuff and can eat a lot of it if I let myself. After eating the granola then I am usually really satisfied until much later in the day. Then for dinner I will usually snack on carrots while I make supper for my family or romaine lettuce with almond butter, then if I'm not full I'll eat some kind of veggies. Sometimes I'll have some kind of frozen banana something for desert. But lately it has made me way too full so I'm planning on cutting out the banana desert at night, or maybe I'll cut out the veggie meal and keep the banana desert :) Gotta love raw. Some of the things that I snack on with my granola that are not raw are dried mangos and dark chocolate. These are my little treats. I know these things probably don't help with weight loss, but right now I feel like just starting out that I'm doing pretty good and don't mind having these little things.
Anyway, thanks for you reply and it did help.

Now stay off that scale now, I swear its evil sometimes! :woot:
Sounds like your doing pretty good, minus the sandwich, unless its wrapped in some kind of leafy green and not bread - bread is also evil.
For me diet plays a huge role in where my body fat % is. Doesn't matter how hard I push myself during the workouts. I'm sure eventually you'll rather fill up on the AM smoothie and PM salad then to chow down on the heavy granola and nuts, who knows it could be small changes like that that helps you get to your goal.
What are your work outs like?

Oh, I did forget to mention that for the sandwiches I use raw apple, carrot flax bread that I make in my dehydrator. I will sometimes eat some SAD food, but I try to keep it to once a week if it is really bad stuff. I just figure with me starting out it is better to eat a bit of what I'm craving and then move on with my raw diet then to keep thinking about it and fall completely off the wagon. But like everyone here says, it's a process and it's your process. I'm looking forward to when I no longer crave SAD food, but I digress.
My workouts are as often as I can sneak them in with 3 kids ages 6 and under :) My hubby helps, so I try for cardio 3-5 times a week, jogging, walking biking. And then try to fit in 20 min of yoga as often as I can, usually about 3-5 times a week also. Then I will also do a bit of a workout that I found on-line that supposedly The actor Kate from LOST did to get her awesome arms....I don't have arms like Kate yet, but they are most toned then before I started the workout :)
Thanks again, I'm enjoying our "conversation"

banana: Have you considered lowering your seed and nut intake and upping your coconut (oil) and avo intake? Nuts and seeds are awesome in small quantities and soaked. Soaking can provide up to 10x the nutrient content and remove some natural toxins (in almonds for example). But they are hard to digest and heavy when consumed in high quantities. Freshness is also tough to measure. Coconut and avos on the other hand are amazing foods. I always noticed increased energy and vitality when I consume them. I eat 1-3 avos and 1-3 spoon fulls of virgin coconut oil per day. It seems counterintuitive for weight loss at first but it works!

I have started adding coconut oil to my green smoothie in the mornings, and I usually put 1/4 to 1/2 avocado either on my sandwich or salad, but I wouldn't mind increasing them, they are both really yummy.
I do soak all the seeds and nuts that I eat. The thing is I will eat and eat and eat all day until I finally eat some nuts. For me, right now, it just seems more economical to eat some nuts instead of eating $50 worth of fruits and veggies. I'm not working right now, I'm a full time mom, so maybe when I am making my own money I will do it. But also I was hoping that I would find that my consumption would go down a bit. Anyway, having said all that I will try to cut back on my nuts some and happily increase avo and coconut oil and see what happens.
I read in another post that you said your body fat was now in the single digits, and I was wondering are you 100% raw or just close to it? What was your BMI before going raw? Also how much weight have you lost since going raw. I think we have been on this forum and starting eating raw about the same time, but I have yet to reach 100%....yet.
Thanks for letting me pick your brain, just trying to learn as much as I can about how raw effects each person.
Oh and RawSar I forgot to mention my cardio workout is about 50 min.

I think the most economical thing you can do to increase healthy fats is to spend your money on some virgin, cold pressed coconut oil. It's 2x the price of regular coconut oil but you'll spend maybe $20/mo to get lots of very healthy fat. Avos are not cheap, at least where I live.
As for my stats, it's not very straight forward. I did a 22 day cleanse before going raw that resulted in me losing about 20lbs. Before the cleanse I was 185lbs and my BF was around 27% (I'm 5'10"). I finished the cleanse at 165lbs with BF in the high teens. In the five/six weeks since going 99% raw (I eat VEGA Health Optimizer), my body has transformed with tons of new muscle and definition despite staying exactly at 165lbs. My BF is now at around 12%...I think I said near single digits. ;) I have no clue how it is that this transformation is happening so fast. My body changes literally on a weekly basis...it's amazing! But it's definitely more than just going raw...it's eating a protein rich diet, exercising and possibly even the cleanse...I read somewhere that cleansing triggers production of growth hormone but I don't know if it's true.
As a reminder, BF% is different for men and women. My current BF% is equivalent to around 20% BF for women.

I would love to do a cleanse, I'm sure my body would benefit. But that is something I will have to wait on for awhile due to the fact that I am still nursing my toddler. my BMI, if I punch in my stats on an online BMI calculator, is at 21 right now, my goal is to be at 20, so I'm almost there. I guess not being 100% really makes a big difference, I keep hearing people on this forum say it, I just don't think I have the umph to go 100% yet. So I guess I will just have to be happy and patient with myself and the progress I've made so far.
I checked, and the coconut oil I have is virgin and cold pressed. Other then putting it in green smoothies what is another way to consume it, that is easy.... that is. I already put about a Tablespoon in, that is a good amount.....right?

I don't know from personal experience but yeah, everybody keeps saying that there is a big difference between even 90% and 100%. It makes sense. I personally found going 100% much easier but doing things gradually doesn't work well for me.
I put coconut oil in smoothies too but I also take a spoon full of oil and throw it in my mouth along with three dates. That's my amazingly simple, incredibly tasty and energy boosting daily desert. :)

Mix well in your moth and enjoy. :) It does have to be done with virgin cold pressed oil that is full of flavor. It's not so pleasant with regular, tasteless oil.

Oh, Thanks :D But I have to give a lot of the credit to my hubby for helping get the time. When he gets home from work I go for a walk or jog or bike. The yoga I sneak in while my toddler is taking her nap and before my 5 yr old realizes that I have laid her down :) Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My yoga routine is only 20 min. But my hubby works on the beach at a restaurant. It has been the slow season for us here, but Spring Break is about to start, which is great for hours but not for my excersine time. I'm already wondering how I'm going to fit it in now that the busy season is coming back around....maybe wake up early and do it in the morning? But that would mean waking at 5:30  Anyway, just trying to brainstorm.
But for me getting out and exercising is my sanity, you know as a mom the thing that helps you stay sane? It is the one thing I do for ME!! I also try to sneak in quiet time with God, and by doing so, it make everything else run more smoothly because I am more centered and calm...kwim. Because as many have said "if momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy" Such pressure we have as moms....:heart

Monounsaturated fat and Omega 3 with EPA and DHA helps protect against heart disease by lowering bad cholesterol and raising good cholesterol. It also helps body in a very nice way. I like your idea for sharing it with all here. It is also much beneficial for knowing about this.

My first year of going raw, i consummed a lot of good fat and i went underweight that same year, lol..... So for me, it definitely didn't make me gain weight but lose all of my fat. I did raw food my health not to lose weight but certainly lost any fat storage i had.
Interesting post anyway.

I can personally attest to this theory as my experiences support it. I can only theorize why it's true but I'll give it a shot.
I have found that it's not limited to monounsaturated fat, although that's definately a choice. I have found that even saturated fat (even from non-plant sources) also cause fat loss. As I've said before, I did an experiment when I was younger where, in an attempt to gain weight, I upped my caloric intake to 4000 daily and was ingesting about 500g of saturated, non plant based fats on a daily basis. I did this for two weeks hoping to put on some weight (i was sick of being skinny). After the two weeks I found that I LOST 5lbs and I could finally see my abs XD.
My theory is that when you eat foods with a high concentration of fat, and they're RAW, there is an abundance of the enzyme "lipase". I believe that when there is enough lipase presemt in the diet, it will break down the undigested fats that get stored in the body and one will reach an ideal bodyfat %. To cite two studies that i'm most familiar with:
1.) Dr. David Galton of Tufts university, Schoole of Medicine, examined 11 individuals weighing around 235lbs and found lipase enzyme deficiency in the fatty tissue as well as the fatty tumors. Without the fat splitting enzyme lipase, fat builds up throughout one's body.
2.)A small town local paper in Hot Springs Arkansas ran a piece entitled, "Can Enzyme Regiments End Obesity?". The article was an account of a National Dietary Research Council experiment in which the researchers had the test subjescts consume at LEAST 6 large meals per day along with an enzyme complex supplement that was thought might help the body overcome its resistance to weight loss. Of the 50 people who participated in the study, the women lost an average of 1lb a day. The emn lost an average of 2lbs per day.
In regards to study #2, anyone who has fasted will note the weight loss is about the same. This would suggest that anyone taking a proper enzyme supllement in combination with raw foods would essentially get similar results if they had fasted instead.
