Taurine, is it safe ? Any known harmful effects ?

A friend believe in a commecial drink called Lipovitan, Taurine is one of the ingredients. i cannot find anything from mainstream sites.

It is in a lot of the new "energy" drinks. I believe that if you drink a lot of them your body will slow down or stop producing its own taurine and if you stop them cold turkey you may have some issues. I read this a while back when deciding whether or not to buy a energy health supplement. Decided not to...

This is not raw; it's made from animal products. Whether taking an isolated "nutrient" like that is safe long term ~ I'd say no just as I'd say no about any isolated ingredient. Doesn't matter that they say it'll be excreted by the kidneys ~ for me, it's making the kidneys work harder AND it throws the body off balance so, I'd so no. Long term? Not safe.
