does anyone know of a good raw coffee substitute that doesn't have the caffeine and goes well in nut milk smoothies ? the closest I can think of is maca but it doesn't taste like coffee...

I'm not much help, I'm afraid (have never had a cup of coffee in my life!), but wanted to ask if it's coffee flavour you're looking for? Well, I suppose it must be. Hmm. I've heard ground dandelion root is kind of similar (though I understand it's roasted to achieve the coffee-like flavour). I have a friend who is trying to give up coffee and I'm curious if anyone else has suggestions!

yes I'm after the flavour...I cant believe you have never had a coffee ! I dont drink coffee at home but on rare rare occasions I may endulge if I'm in a coffee house...it really is not good for you though.
I got this recipe for a chocolate shake of Karen Knowlers you tube channel. I thought it would be great with a coffee substitute in it ? mind you this one blew my mind.
1 cup of raw cashews
3 cups of filtered water (use refrigerated water in summer for a colder shake)
2-3 dates chopped
2-3 desert spoons of cacao powder to taste
2 teaspoons of honey
blend but dont strain...heaven

Check out this one: Best Coffee Ever (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=29006&highlight=coffee)
Still my favorite. You can get by without the fo-ti, lucuma, and yacon syrup, but if you are serious about it get your hands on all these ingredients and give it a try. Don't forget to drizzle a little cacao syrup in the glass or on top.
