I found a used vitamix for $100. SUPER deal! Im just wondering though, its from 1983. Im wondering if they are as good as the newer ones? Its such a great deal, and everything on it works, and comes with the blending jar, so its complete. I just dont want to buy it, and find out that the older ones werent as strong as the new ones...what do you think?

I don't think it matters. If you want to save money, get it. I'm sure it will blend beautifully. You'll never know unless you either contact Vitamix and ask the question or do a side-by-side comparison.
I hope someone comes and says that they have actually done that....
If you can't afford a new one, go ahead and get the used one! You can always save up and buy a new one later and ask for friends and family to chip in for one for your birthday or other significant event.
I'm a little squeamish buying "used" food prep equipment from people I don't know, even if it's been sterilized. One of my little pet peeves.

i would buy it in a heart beat! what a great deal and even if it's not as good as a new one (cause it probably isn't...) who cares! it's not like i'm going to replace mine in ten years just to get the newer model... mine does a GREAT job! (and it's 3 years old)

almost 30 years old ...
why not get a 30 year mortgage on a new vitamix instead :)
and how much is a new vitamix? Based on the age and money for this one, I'd guess a new one is around $1000 or so. Now that sounds like a really expensive blender to me. I don't know what are you putting in the blender that it needs to be that good.. I have one which was $80 new and it works perfectly fine :)

Ooh, I have a hard time passing up a great bargain! But, yeah, if a brand new vitamix would cost around $400, and an almost-30-year-old one is a quarter of that cost, I would probably spring for a new one. I'm also a little squeamish about used appliances. Can you test it out before opting to buy it? But, then, hey, it would be cool to own a 'retro' vitamix!
Guess I'm not really much help here...! ;)

$100 is a stretch for me to spend on a blender. There is NO WAY I am spending $600 on a blender. They were selling vitamixes at costco a few months ago, for SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS. now mind you, I live in Canada, and everything is more expensive here, but yeah. ok. No flipping way. I dont care how good of an appliance it is, that is just price gouging.

dime, you should do some research on vita-mix and then you'll know why 80% of this forum owns one! :)

I saw a Costco ad for them in Canada the other day for $450.
Like Aleesha I would not give up my Vitamix for any amount fo $$. I use it 2-3 times a day. And it is head and shoulders above my old one that I "put up" with for a couple years before I saw the light.
Do it!!

Consider this ~ resale value. If a brand new VM costs $450 and someone can get $100 for one 27 years old, what's that tell you?
Now, look at this ~ $450 divided by 27 ='s $16. That's $16 a YEAR!
If you pay $100 (I'd actually offer $75 ~ :D ) for a used VM and it lasts you say, 4 years, you're still ahead of the game.

I own a VitaMix I've had since the mid 80's - so just about as old. My daughter has a brand new one she got last year - they are essentially identical. Mine works just as well; she's used mine, I've used hers... nothing we do has to change. Go for it. They are essentially indestructable...
I wouldn't worry about speed/power or anything else. The old ones can still beat anything on the market except another like blender, ie. VitaMix, BlendTec (I just saw them at CostCo last week in the states).

I just bought my VM from their website about 6 months ago. I bought the refurbished one, which has the 10 year warranty, and they allow you to make payments. I think it was an additional $15 to make 3 payments, but it's what I wanted and was worth it to me. I think I payed $349 or something like that--it was significantly enough cheaper for me to buy it and still get the 10 yr warranty. BTW, some of the best money I've spent!

I had the old stainless steel model for years and years and it was awesome! Very, very powerful and could do all the things the new ones do. My mother is 90 and still has and uses the one she bought in the late 70's. Mine now is eight years old and going strong. They are tanks and built to last! I'd snap it up in a second.
Yes, a new one would be great but you do what fits your budget.

I got mine from a friend, it is from the 80's as well and is the stainless steel .... love it! It works fantasticly! Only, I've used mine so much and due to age, the seals now need replaced but luckily vita-mix sells replacement seals for semi cheap for that model still so yay! just been to lazy to order them since it technically still works, just gets a little messy every now and then.

Sounds like you'd better grab it before one of us do....just kidding. Rev really is right on the button and she's right about offering less....couldn't hurt. This also could be someone who doesn't use it very much, it would be good to ask and find out if it's been gently used or if they are a raw foodist and have used it every day. Good Luck.
