I have been feedind my dog raw chicken for a few weeks now, she seems not to digest it well. Lots of gas and Ive noticed runny stool. I switched to red meat and the condition improved a little but still having some issues. When I first started on raw diet for her 1 year ago I would mix her chicken with different veggies, eggs and coconut oil. She seem to digest all that perfectly. Then recently I wanted to try some meat and bone by itself and thats when the issues started. I read that dogs dont need all the extra stuff witch is why I stopped with the veggies and other ingre, has any one else had these issues?? Help ;(:eat

Not uncommon for dogs to go through a transitional (detox) phase when they first start out on RMB's and it varies with each dog. A little canned whole pumpkin (not pie filling) works wonders for diarrhea. You might also want to try trimming a little fat off the meat for now. Has raw chicken been your dog's primary source of meat protein for the past yr?

Actually there are differing points of view regarding adding veggies etc. I have been feeding raw for over 10 years and I use my GreenStar juicer adapter to bring veggies out crushed and I give my dogs a cup a day. I also give raw egg yolks. I also cook sweet potatoes or acorn squash and sometimes add them plus yogurt. I use herbs too. My dogs love seeds and nuts (macadamia are dangerous) and fruit. Just feeding meat is not really a good idea in my opinion. I make sure to rotate the meats. LH

Hello Sandra. From what I understand, dogs are omnivores, not true carnivores like cats. It sounds like the previous diet was working out real well for your pet. Perhaps it makes sense to revert to that. I don't know how much fat is on the meat you are serving, but in agreement with lafsalot, my experience has been that too much fat contributes to diarrhea.

Also, if you completely eliminated the veggies suddenly instead of gradually, that could have contributed to the situation. It seems like some dogs have a real hard time balancing again after sudden changes.

Hi, If you click on the raw food recipe in my signature line, you can see what you should & shouldn't be feeding your dog & why bone is a no-no. You should be also alternating between at least 3 meats.

That info you supplied comes from Pat McKay and while her book Reigning Cats and Dogs has some great info, some of her ideas/beliefs are not necessarily worth following strictly. Also there is the matter of her promotion of her products.
