I see a lot of questions about how much it costs to run these things. Well it turns out it isn't that much. The amounts below are for a 24 hour run time in the US assuming a 15c per kwh cost of electricity.
9 tray (600 watts) $2.16
5 tray (440 watts) $1.58
4 tray (220 watts) 0.80c
so for the large 9 tray you are only talking 9 cents per hour to run :)

the cost of running you dehydrator is pretty equivalent to running your fridge.
so no worries on consumption!

You can always try something like this: http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/2006-08-01/Build-a-Solar-Food-Dehydrator.aspx
Drop in a thermometer & place the box in diffuse sunlight so the temp doesn't get too high.
