Has anyone had problems when they eat them? I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary today except more sunflower seeds than normal and for the first time in 15 days my face is breaking out all over tonight. Could it be the seeds? I've been reading around about how they may not be natural for us to eat and about the toxins in them (that's why we soak). Just wondering if anyone else has had to keep the nut consumption low?

Thanks,
Karen

Karen,

Can you be more specific, like what kind of nuts, organic, conventional, are they soaked, how many, etc?

If you are having detox symtoms they can last for a few days & up to a week.

Are you drinking plenty of water? Are you getting water rich foods like juicy fruits, melons, citrus, that sort of thing? Are you eating lots of greens?

Karen,
nuts and seeds are generaly harder to digest and if you don't soak them then even more, because they contain in them en enzyme inhibitor, preventing them to sprout. That is why they don't sprout until you put them in water and that removes the enzyme inhybitor. Then they would be more digestible.
I do have the same problem with them.

Sharon, the seeds I ate yesterday were raw sunflower seeds, but they weren't soaked. Do you think that not soaking them would cause my face to break out? It has been clearer and clearer every day until yesterday when I ate more sunflower seeds than usual. I was also out of fruit! Ack!

rawmommie,

IMHO, the only way to know for sure whether or not it was the sunflower seeds is to omit them from your diet for a while and see what happens...see if your face begins to clear up and not break out any further.

It very well could be (and I know this sounds cliche' right about now) detox..it's a possibility. Has this ever happened before when you've eaten s.f. seeds?

No, but I haven't ever eating them by the handful like I did yesterday. I only sprinkled a little on my salad's in the past. I used to have problems with nuts in my previous way of eating (Atkins). I would gain weight from eating them and thought maybe I was just holding water from the salt they were coated in (obviously they weren't raw)

I'm taking them out of my diet for a few days to see how I feel. :)

The seeds could have been it then. Or else moon time? LOL

I had problems with sunflower seeds in particular. Never had problems before going raw. I tried some raw sunflower seeds on my salad and I was doubled over with stomach pain. The next day I realized that I hadn't digested them - they went right through me, if you know what I mean. So I have avoided them since.
I'm eat raw nuts - but in moderation. Like a handful a week. Any more - I seem to have the same problem - stomach discomfort. Also cashews - I can't eat them. Again, I don't digest them.

Lil, do you soak your nuts/seeds first?

I, too, have digestion issues with nuts ONLY when I don't soak them first. If I soak them overnight, then they're fine; but if I eat them straight out of the bag, then I get indigestion and sometimes stomach aches.

No, I haven't tried soaking them. I just have this image of soggy seeds...yuck! Do they go soggy? Does it change the taste?
