How?

I like to peel an orange with a knife as I read somewhere that when you leave as much of the white skin as possible its good for you. I've had one faithful serrated edged kitchen knife for a couple of years.Yesterday the handle popped off so I went to the local hardware store and bought 2 more. The problem is these are straight edged and boy, are they sharp. Over the last few years I've had plenty of bumps with my old knife but because it was blunt it never even drew blood. If I have a bump with one of the new ones,I'll probably loose a hand!
So, any suggestions on any kind of safety knives or otherwise? thanks.

my hubby makes sure he doesn't sharpen my knives too much cause i'm always cutting myself if he lets them get too sharp...

i find that the handle is important. i have some rubber/plastic handles and they are much better for me. my hubby's knives are metal... and i'm always slipping if i try to use them... so i stay away from those slippery buggers LOL

but those don't leave the white on, which is what they want. they want to just slice off the orange part of the peel and leave as much white as possible. they need some kind of a knife for that.

This is why I love serrated knives. :)

I'm terrified of very sharp plain edged knives!

It has a hard little nip blade on the face of it that lets you score the orange, and then you use the flat, pointed tip to reach up under the peel and loosen it. It doesn't take all of the white off. Mine don't, anyway. Some comes off with the peel, but some stays on the orange. But if you're wanting all of the white cut loose from the peel, then, yeah, won't work.

I like to use a vegetable peeler to remove the peel from oranges. You can top and tail the orange with a knife. Then just go around in circles around the orange with the peeler and you end up with one long orange peel, and one orange with most of the pith still intact.

My husband bought me these special gloves to wear while using knives since he heard me give out a yelp one too many times. We were ready to buy stock in bandaids !
They look metallic and feel like space man gloves. No blade can cut thru them.
I know he got them thru amazon.

And don't throw out those orange peels (lemon and lime also). Let them air dry for about a week. Grind them down in a coffee grinder. Add kosher salt, epsom salt or even plain old table salt and a few tablespoons of olive or your favorite oil. You've got yourself a fantastic body scrub for practically free :) My orange peels are drying now!

Tupperware sells citrus peelers cheap. And they work great. I use them all the time and most of the pith is left on the orange. Check for them on ebay.:woot:

Great Idea on the scrubs..thanks! I love lemon. Tangerine is suppose to be good for depression. I had some soap that really helped. This is better.

I think tupperware makes an orange peeler, it kind of looks like a small tooth brush but has a small plastic wedge type blade that you score the peel with then the peel comes off easy.

Great idea, Mbncb! My suggestion was just going to be to zest the orange. That way you would leave a lot of white, as well as have some great orange flavoring to mix in with a raw chocolate cake :)
