So has anyone grown them successfully??
I saw a video on how you put toothpicks in the pit and bob it in a glass of water.until it flowers,so you can plant it.I know they come from very hot places, and our summers are like the center of hell,so I got that part covered :)
Anyones experience or tips is appreciated..............

Hmm. My first thought was that this wouldn't work because it needs to grow into a tree which needs hot weather year-round. But I just saw a site that said you could bring it inside for the winter. So I guess it could work but to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if you hit a roadblock or two. It's a plant meant to grow in warm climates, so keeping it inside for part of the year in a pot and hoping to get fruit might be a bit of a risk. But I guess you'll never know till you try.
It also takes years to develop fruit and it's possible you might need more than one for pollination? I don't know, I'd just keep buying from the store, but that's me! :)

I'd done it and quite successfully although, I think if you're looking to grow a tree....
My client and I were just talking about this because I've got a sweet potato growing.
Far as I know, all you'll get from doing the toothpick/seed thing is an amazing vine that can take over your world. I've tried it recently (as did my client) and nothing happened. We're wondering if it has to do with something that's been done to the fruit.
Anybody?

i cant comment on the toothpick method, but i used to chuck them in the compost, and the compost eventually ended up in our greenhouse and eventually 3 of them sprouted because they never broke down in the compost. one of them got to about 6 feet tall before the guy who owned the greenhouse cut it down :( it was probably 2 or 3 years old. i dont expect it ever would have put out fruit though; irish weather isnt very avocado-friendly i dont think. i also think i remember seeing an avocado tree at someones house near oxford but he said it had never fruited. so i think they will grow alot of places but not sure of where they will fruit. anyhow, we just sort of accidently ended up with some of the pits sprouting...

avocados do need warm growing conditions they are a tropical/subtropical plant. they don't produce fruit unitl around 10-15 years, and you will most likely need at least two trees for pollination. They do not tolerate cold, and are very vunerable to frost damage.
