View Full Version : Vitamix Question -- 48 oz vs. 64 oz. Container?

I hope to purchase a VM 5200 soon and was wondering whether to get the 48 oz or the 64 oz container? I'll be prepping food for just two people. Many times I cut recipes in half because they are just too large for me.
A 48 oz container would fit better under my cabinets but I don't want to go that small if it'll be too limiting.
What do you think?
Thanks.

bigger is always better. if you don't need the extra - no problem. if you do... then it sucks to not have it!

I agree as well with a "but"... If you have storage issues, small one out and handy is better than a larger one that's always stashed away.
I have the large pitcher, but am seriously considering purchasing the small because of the cupboard issue in this house. (I BUILT it a place to live in the old one, lol.)

I actually have and use both. Storage ~ store the large container next to the base and the short one in the cupboard. I use the small one for dressings and one-serve items but the large one is used most often.
*receives more nuts cuz blue jays are thieves and can find hidden nuts all OVER the place.... looks for better hiding places... after eating breaky* :)

Okay, I went for it. I got a good price on a refurbed 5200 with the 64-oz container from Vitamix.com (better deal than what's available on Ebay, all things considered) and I got the 48 oz container as well. (I used the free shipping coupon :) but still had to pay tax :().
So I guess that's one way to solve my dilemma!
Can't wait until that Bad Boy gets here!!

That's what I'm up against as my kitchen is small so I don't have much countertop or cupboard space. I've been going back and forth trying to decide with container to go with but since my current blender has a 6-cup container and I've never run into a problem with it being too small, I will probably end up going with the 48 oz. container. That way I can just leave the whole thing on my countertop.

My smaller one is a dry foods container so great for making nut flours and such.
Wether making smoothies for 1 or all seven of us I use the large container.
I keep the larger container next to my base and the smal on the based. All on the counter top under the cabinets in a corner. In the summer months we use more frequently throughout the day so often the base is on the island and the container in the sink on a rack drying.

Actually, there are two types of the smaller container, wet and dry. The Vitamix people say that you can use either one for anything, but the dry type is better for making flour, and besides, the plastic container is likely to become cloudy from all the micro-scratches left by the dry grain, and it would be nice to have one that you can still see through for other recipes.
I have both a large and a small (wet, I think). Even though they are labelled as 64 and 32 (not 48) ounce capacity, either one works best when about half full. When less than maybe a quarter full, the blender tends to go into washing-machine mode, splashing the food (especially liquids) up onto the sides of the container and the inside of the lid. When more than about three quarters full, it tends to have trouble (especially with less liquid) getting the top of the ingredients into the mix. Using the stomper often helps, but does not always do the trick.
So I use the small container when making between 1 and 3 cups of finished product, and the large one for between 2 and 6 cups.

I also agreed that bigger is better, and I also have a "BUT"
BUT
with the money that the small container costs, you culd buy a small Magic Bullet to use for smaller things, and then you can use the Magic Bullet when travelling. And you'd still have some $$$ left over.
Yes, compared to a V-M, a Magic Bullet is a toy but it's great for travelling, and for dry grinding and small smoothies...for kids.... etc....
I really like my little "toy" Magic Bullet.

That's a very sensible idea, Mary Kay -- a small-batch blender and a travel blender both for one low price!
Unfortunately, I don't think it would work well for me. I am thinking of getting a travel blender, but I'm glad that I already have my small Vita-Mix container. (In fact, I wish they had a 1 or 2 cup container available as well, for sauces.) I don't use much liquid in my smoothies (the texture is really more like pudding, and I eat it with a spoon), so they usually turn out around 2 or 3 cups. That's a perfect fit for the 32-ounce V-M container, which I generally use a couple of times a day.
