If so, you can easily buy hard red winter wheat berries from a bulk bin at Whole foods. Or you can order from wheatgrasskits.com, as they have a decent price.

My local health food store also carries wheat for juicing. I bought the soft white berries and I'm making my first batch of rejuvelac right now too. You use 2 different berries for each of these though. At least that's my understanding.

I cut the whole tray and store all the cut grass in the fridge in green bags and then juice it daily.

I then toss the root mass (in dirt). We have compost bins, but I don't compost it because it's almost impossible to break apart and it makes a mess in our compost. I hate throwing it away, but I don't know what else to do with it.

I do compost the grass after it's been juiced though. *Ü*

I love how we can use something to feed us and then take the left overs to feed the soil, so that the soil will feed the plant, so that it will bear fruit/veggies to feed us! A perfect design!!:) By the way we love our juicer! We use the green star so it does wheat grass easily!

DebB -- we have a worm farm so I sometimes put the wheatgrass roots in there for the worms to play in. I have to let them get really dry first tho so I can kinda break them apart a bit.

Hi levamssg ~ I would love it if I could do something with my WG root mass other than toss it in the garbage! :) I've tried so many different things like tossing it straight into the compost, trying to hack it apart and then compost it, leaving it sit out in our hot desert sun then trying to pull it apart to compost. None of them have worked. It just doesn't break down and then every time we turn the compost with our spade, we get a big spade full of wheatgrass mass that has to be pulled off the tines. Irritating. (We don't compost young Thai coconut shells either. For a while, we were saving them for campfires because they do burn nicely - but they really take up the space! -- so, we do toss both of these items).

The only thing I can think of to try is to have its own dedicated compost bin, but for our setup, it's just not practical right now. I hate tossing anything away, but that's why I gotta do.

Maybe one day we'll get a worm setup and I'll definitely keep that in mind!! And woo-hoo, I just harvested my WG about an hour ago and it was my first ever completely mold-free tray. I grow 8x8" trays so I can water them in our sink and let them drain. I keep a small electric fan blowing on them 24/7 (as per the Hippocrates Wheat Grass DVD) and it sure worked well. I soaked, sprouted and then planted 1 pound of hard red winter wheatberries in the 8x8" tray. I cut the whole tray, store in green bags (Debbie Meyer's) and juice 50g of WG to = 1 ounce juice. *Ü*

I'm being nosy and I realize you didn't ask - but I've ordered trays from 2 places now. Wheatgrasskits.com and more recently through Hippocrates Health Institute (http://secure.hippocratesinst.org/admin/category/16/sprouting). The trays from Hippocrates are much better I find.

I also checked out their DVD through our library (I requested it and they bought it - love our library!) and I follow their method of growing and that's why I just harvested my first ever mold free tray - and I've grown several trays over the past year or so of juicing WG.

I ordered the 10x10" trays as they recommend taking the tray to your sink and thoroughly watering it (until it drips out the drain holes) and then leaving it to drain in the sink for at least 15 minutes or so. That's why I got the 10x10s because I can fit them in my sink. I leave it to drain a good half hour and I've never had a mess that way.

I ordered extra trays because for the first 3 days I have another tray inverted over the WG tray to keep out the sun. Plus I grow sunflower greens too. They're only $2 each for that size.

What/whoever you choose - I wish you the best of wheatgrass juicing! *Ü*

I was looking at Trays 5 for $9.00 which is ok BUT I am worried about the plastic. If they're coming from that institute, that's where I am buyin' them!

Home Depot had a clearance on their bagged organic soil 1 1/2 years ago and I bought about 30 bags of it. I never thought to read the label, but someone pointed out that there's chicken manure (or something like that - don't recall) in there.

But - that's what I use. Hippocrates recommends buying bagged soil that contains peat moss and if it doesn't have peat moss in it - to add the PM so it makes up 30% of the mix. (I hope I have that number correct - it's been a while since I watched the DVD).

No - I have never fertilized. Mind you - I'm going by the Hippocrates DVD, which has their lead nurseryman giving the lecture. I figure these folks know what they're doing. He said no fertilizer or additive does anything to help boost the end product (which I found really interesting). *Ü*

I"m a graduate of hippocrates here in West Palm Beach...anything to do with raw, growing, seeds, etc..you can get from them...their products are high quality, and the gals on the phone very helpful...Great place to shop in, and greater place to spend time at...I learned raw there too.

I've ordered trays in the past elsewhere, and they weren't nearly as nice as the ones I'm using now from Hippocrates. I don't imagine they'll last "forever", but they're made from a heavier plastic and have not cracked or split yet. I use them for both wheatgrass and sunflower greens. *Ü*
