my sweet hubby has asked if he can use my awesome Excalibur, that has only ever had raw vegan food in it, to make elk and venison jerky:eek:. i balked at the idea and was not very kind in my reply. he bought the thing, as a gift for me, but he did buy it nonetheless.

how would you feel about letting someone make meat jerky in your dehydrator?
how would you communicate your feelings to them?

Um, NO WAY!!

I guess I would buy him a cheaper dehydrator for his "food".....

personally i would order a few extra replacement trays just for him to use in it. i wouldnt cause a relationship issue over a peice of equipment :)

i wouldnt however allow him to do his meat at the *same* time ..and would expect him to clean the unit very well (due to cross contamination issues* :)

I really NO WAYED all over him, lol. Thanks, I feel less conflicted about my response to him now.

Thanks for your response, it helps me feel better about how I responded to the situation. Getting him his own unit as Monk suggested would be a much better answer in this case as my guy is NOT detail oriented and would not clean my unit well enough to avoid any cross contaminates. I do have to say that if a piece of kitchen equipment usage caused a relationship issue we wouldn't have a very strong relationship. He is pretty good about seeing that I make a lot more concessions than the cooked food eaters in this family do, so he understood why I replied the way I did, and I did thank him for asking me instead of just doing it and going for forgiveness after the fact.

Well, I've got 3 dehydrators...I'd give him my first one, the "Walmart special" for that...

Nobody puts meat in Mama's Big "D"!!! :)

Well, I guess I'm the odd woman out. What's the difference really? You're going to wash the trays, they'll be clean.

The jerky will be fantastic tasting - much better tasting than the stuff I used to make when I low carbed in my trusty old Ronco!

My husband eats meat and yes, I've made him jerky in my Excalibur. He's really not asking much. *Ü*

I appreciate your thoughts on this and admire your easy going way of looking at it. I still don't want meat in my D though.

I have to agree with DebB. Let's not be so fanatical. He's your husband for goodness sake. Is he asking so much??

lol i understand in a way. almost had an aneurysm when i saw my dad grinding up turkey meat in MY food processor (it had only known raw food! lol) and was spreading biscuit dough and turkey meat all over MY cutting board X_X
but, hey, I didn't die.

don't really know what to tell ya. if you dont want meat in there get him a cheapie one. i know some of the thrifty folks on here (looking at you, DebB!) luck out and get all sorts of goodies at thrift stores, but i've never been that lucky

True JennaHoneyBear ~ I scored a like-new 4 tray Excalibur, still in its box at GoodWill for $10 this summer! (complete with hard covered dehydrating book and a roll of parchment) Woot!

Well, I do ask my husband not use my wooden cutting boards for meat. We've got plenty of nice big plasticy ones that can go in the dishwasher and be sanitized. *Ü*

I'm with you on the no meat on my wooden cutting boards - but jerky in the "D" - gotta be better for them than packaged stuff. Don't know if I could stand the smell though while it was cooking!!

wow. I am being "fanatical" because I would like 1 piece of kitchen equipment I own (& only own it because I eat raw) to remain vegan? So, are you saying I am asking too much? My brain is not wrapping around this.

Lol! I had some mental wrestling going on when the blendtec got cooked food in it, but I didn't say anything about it. Cleaning up after him grinding his own elk burgers wasn't fun, but I didn't say anything about that either. Thankfully that was with a grinding attachment for the Kitchen Aid and not in the FP or BT. I have done some research today and found that quite a lot of folks use the oven or a smoker for their jerky so I really don't think he needs to use the D.

What a great score! Good for you! I'll frequent those stores more and keep my eyes open. I have found some lovely dishes in the past at thrift stores.

We do the same thing with cutting boards here, meat/fish on the plastic, fruit/veggies on the wood. And, I don't freak over cooked food hitting the wooden board.

There is something to be said for the ability to pop a tool in the dishwasher and have it sanitized. I'm not sure the Excalibur mesh trays are dishwasher safe.

Hi Snoops!!!
I know I am having trouble with the smell of the regular cooking of meat and the prolonged smell of it the D would probably send me packing. I do agree that making it has got to better for him than the packaged stuff. I would love for him to get his own smoker and he can "jerk" to his heart's content outside. Hmmm... wonder if I can find one in a thrift store...

Okay - icky!! :D I'll be honest - I don't want to be cleaning up meat goo, that's where I draw the line. When hubby cooks meat, it's him doing the clean up, not me. He's a hunter too, so...

I'm not sure either but mine don't fit in my d'washer (sigh) - I sure wish they did!! I bought a plastic 1 drawer unit (a plastic frame that houses 1 drawer) at Walmart and I use that plastic drawer to soak my D trays. Works like a charm! I can't fit all of them in at once, because water leaks out where the drawer's handle is - but I can get fit 5 in there. ;)

My sweetie just isn't very thorough so I clean it up so I know it's really all cleaned up. I am usually the one cooking it for him as well. I would love it if he would do more of his own cooking. On the big hunting things he does a major zip zap zoop and I follow getting all the smaller stuff he missed. Love him dearly and he just doesn't do details, lol.

What a great idea! I haven't tried to see if they fit in the d'washer as I wasn't sure they could stand the sanitizing temps. I'm now on the look out for something like you are describing.

I just took the measurement (14"?) of the tray and then carried a little tape measurer in my purse and measured those drawers until I found something that would be large enough. Those trays are big!

When I get a new kitchen sink, I will get one large enough so that I can soak my D trays in there! How's that for a priority of picking a new sink...? ;)
