An MD told me my blood test shows very low D - then gave told me to take 10,000 units daily.

Is that a bit extreme?

Has anyone had any experience with low D or taking the vitamin?

Sorry for all the questions here lately. I guess that I'm feeling very insecure these days. You people are the only people I've met who understand these struggles. My friends are family have about had it with me and my "journey" to health.

hmm.. that seems somewhat high...

do you live way North?

Are you African-American? Pregnant or breastfeeding?

Just asking because I am African American and live in WI - my midwife said that I needed a lot of Vit D because of the reduced UVA-B rays in WI, especially in the winter. I was recommended to go up to 6,000/ day for 2-3 days at a time, then back down to 1200IU daily... THis was when I was pregnant. I still take some Vitamin D but not as much as I did when pregnant...

I can potentially see that as a reasonable dosage if you are severely deficient and showing symptoms, but I would assume that there are reasonable food sources of Vitamin D other than salmon and cod liver oil...

I thought I happened to see somewhere that mushrooms have Vit D?

I use the Carlsons Vit D drops for myself and my son, in a coconut oil base.

I would be interested to see what others say about your dosage as well..

Blessings!

No. No and no!

I was just reading up about darker skinned people being more prone to D deficiency. I'm pretty white (redhead, typical white skin)...I live in CALI. I don't get this. I will say, I don't get out enough, so I can see how I might become deficient...but yeah 10k seems really HIGH. You know...I don't know, it all seems crazy. I actually told the MD that I believe most MDs AND nutritionists string people along for money and supplements (oops, lost my cool there!)... She just told me that the test results show what they show. I took the 1 dosage. I have been feeling all sorts of icky these days, and have candida too, so as far as typical symptoms, its hard to tell.

Like you, I'm interested in hearing what others have to say. Thanks for chiming in, okorolina40

I take vit D and think that most people need to supplement.
I am Irish and my skin got to be this colour in my ancient ancestors day when they spent all day outside but still needed to be this colour to get enough D. I spend most of my day indoors so can not possibly get enough.

When I got my test done on the vitamin D last year, my doctor couldn't believe that I was fine in that area on raw food!! He thought I would be low in it. He said my vitamin D is excellent!

The only thing I could think of is that I go to a tanning salon and eat rainbow colors of raw food. I go tanning, because it seems like it keeps the blues away since I'm not outside as much as I would like to be!!

No, I don't take any supplements.

A researcher at Oregon Health and Science University here in Portland researched the connection between expecting mothers being low in Vit D and rates of autism. Some very strong correlations. Once a family has one child with autism, other babies that come along are very likely to have autism. This study had mothers supplement with vit d and subsequent babies we're much less likely to have autism. Great news!
We're only beginning to understand this vitamin, which is actually a hormone. For one thing, it is manufactured in the skin, so if you sunbathe then shower, you just stripped off the vitamin D.

My understanding is that you can not get VitD from food. Only from Sun, Sunbeds and Supplements.

I believe there's at least one animal source of it, that I won't name ' cause this is a vegan board.

yea. I supplement with 2,000 IU several times a week. In the winter I probably should double it, and remember to do it every day.

Since you know you need it, starting out with a high dose might be good, then level off later.

I did a very quick search to see if it's possible if vitamin D comes from plant sources (which is the Sunshine Vitamin and by the way I have a book about this and need to brush the dust off it to see what would be the amount in the book to take) and found this on the net so far is that raw white mushrooms has Vitamin D, which is interesting, because I do eat a lot of raw white mushrooms. I will cont. to post if there are plant based food out there that may have vitamin D.

Here's the link I found about white mushrooms.

Sorry, copy the whole thing and paste and google

And remember ask all the questions you need to ask, questions are good!!! :D

Is sun an issue where you live?

The sun is an issue in winter because it is too cold to show too much skin but most of the year we can get enough and I supplement at the moment.
It is early morning here now and the temp is 4 below freezing. We are having our coldest spell in this country since records began.

The jar of hemp hearts that I bought says that 5 tbsp has 1200IU of Vita D. I questioned that by looking for nutritional values of hemp hearts online. I couldn't find another source that lists Vita D as one of the nutrients in hemp hearts. I depended on hemp as a D source for about a year but now I supplement.

I have the opposite problem. I have tested extremely low for Vitamin D and I wanted my doctor to give me 6,000-10,000IU, but he only gave 1,000. Everywhere I read about it, it says you need minimum of 6,000. I discussed this with my doctor and he claimed that the Vitamin D he uses is very high quality so that I need less. So I agreed to take 1,000 for 3 months and then I will be retested. If I'm still low I will demand 6,000+ or buy it myself elsewhere. Vitamin D can be toxic so it's important to retest regularly.

One thing I'm starting to finally get is that whatever anyone tells me I have to research to see if its a truth that will serve me. It's a part job job just being a fact finder.

I read that the sun beds commonly used in the U.S.A. use light bulbs with the U.V.B. spectrum instead of the A. ............or was it the other way around? Ha ha, but the idea was that the tanning booths in America won't create vit.D, unfortunately. I actually called two upscale tanning salons in Portland, they had no idea.
