View Full Version : Hated foods, good in raw food?
Hey everyone,
I was browsing the photo threads for ideas and OMG so yummy looking in there! My plan to transition into raw food is to first slowly replace my biggest food loves with raw versions. My favorites would be chocolate, pizza, and hamburgers. In the photo thread I saw a lot of these things.
I was wondering does the raw chocolates actually taste like chocolate or does it just look like it?
Also I dislike the taste of mushrooms and tomatoes which seems to be what is on raw pizza and burgers. Does the burger actually have the slimy, wet texture of a mushroom? Are organic tomatoes taste different then ones you get in the local stores?
I didn't want to ask in the photo thread, since I have zero photos hehe. :P
Thanks for answering all.

You don't EVER have to use a mushroom. I don't. They taste like dirt.

Raw chocolate tastes like good quality chocolate should. It doesn't taste like milk chocolate, but that's not real chocolate anyway ;)
Does the burger actually have the slimy, wet texture of a mushroom? Are organic tomatoes taste different then ones you get in the local stores? You could dehydrate the mushroom to get the wetness away; or there are plenty of burger recipes which don't use mushrooms. They use nuts / sprouted foods / vegetables to form the bulk of the burger. As for the tomatoes - there's not much difference in taste between organic / not organic (that I've noticed). There is, however, a *huge* difference in taste between home-grown and store-bought. A cherry tomato from your own plant is a treat.
Revvell: lol I would have to agree, though it's mostly the texture I don't like.
scyn: Thanks for all your advice. I usually eat 70-80% dark chocolate so raw chocolate may taste good to me too in that case. :) Burger made out of nuts sounds interesting, I have only found recipies made out of dehydrated mushroom. Know of any recipies you could point me to?
Making a garden is on my someday wish list. I would love to grow my own food, but living in an apartment with no backyard puts that on hold for a couple more years.

As far as a pizza replacement goes, I've found that avocado and tomato chopped together on a plate is really great and easy. It has the tomato taste and the avocado gives it the fatty texture of the pizza.

None that I could recommend as I've just never got round to making them. There's a walnut recipe here (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=62233&highlight=burger), and lots to choose from in the forums. (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/search.php?searchid=2313252)

I've seen them grown in little tins before. But I do realise how inconvenient it can be when living in an apartment. Isn't there a communal garden where you could grown a few plants? Sneak out under full moon and sow some seeds...

I blend up a raw cacao drink pretty much every day .... usually use a glass of almond milk, one ripe banana, one Tbl of raw cacao -- blend. Very Good. Can add a bit of vanilla bean too.
If you use a couple frozen bananas instead of one fresh banana, it turns into a sort of chocolate soft serve drink ... my non-raw husband Loves this.
You can sub water for the almond milk -- that's good too.
I've been told cashew milk is great too -- haven't tried it yet but will as soon as I get some cashews.

Thanks for the recipie scyn. :) I could do a few herbs inside but that's about it. Here we have several inches of snow so no gardening outside is possible hehe. I'll have to look around after winter for a communal garden.

The banana drink with almond milk and cacao sounds really yummy. I love bananas, my hubby hates them lol. I'm going to try and make some almond butter this weekend *crosses fingers.*

When I tried to get my husband to eat bananas, he swore he was allergic to them ... but he sure manages to gulp them down in the chocolate concoction. lol :)
You can substitute dates for the banana for a nice sweet almond/date/cacao milk -- it just doesn't get as thick. Tis good tho!

I have always hated mushrooms too, the texture and the taste. But I decided to try them marinated. They were very "filling" with a meaty feeling and actually tasted good, once I could get past the idea of eating them. Not something I will be using a lot, but nice for a change once in a while. I think with some spices added and used in a wrap or tortilla they might be really good. I did put some in a salad and did NOT like it.

Raw chocolate is chocolate, so yes, lol. Some people choose to use carob which is not the same, and I think can be pretty nasty sometimes - and non-raw to boot.
You dislike tomatoes? I love them. =P Have you tried different varieties? Because most of the time in public, you only get beefsteak tomatoes, which are very bland and boring. Little things like sweet plum tomatoes can be really good.
Anyway, you can put anything at all on your pizzas, it's up to you. :) And all of the burgers I've seen were dehydrated and contained a lot of nuts/seeds, so I really doubt they're slimy.

I never liked cheesecake before until I had it raw, mmm. Same to cheese, I could never stand the stuff pre-raw. Same to sour cream and unsweet yogurt as well. As you can tell, I was never fond sour dairy.
I also didn't like spicy stuff pre-raw, but now I've gotten pretty tolerant and habitually sprinkle cayenne on everything.

My BF Hated onions before going raw.... Now he really likes them in everything! We both strongly disliked olives. Probably because the couple of times I had them they were horrible quality. We tried them in a raw pizza and  SO GOOD!!! So we've incorporated them into a lot of recipes.
Taste buds have definitely changed. :D
