View Full Version : Are we eating enough fat?

fat is important for so many functions in the human body-
maintaining nerve impulse transmission
lubrication of joints, eyes, and other various areas...:)
it can curb depression and prevent a host of diseases as well as many other benefits.
I see so many questions on here about depression, hair loss, lack of energy, an inability to find satiation, etc. which could probably mostly be alleviated by an increase in fat consumption.
So I was wondering how much fat the veterans consume. I think not including enough fatty fruits in the diet may be a lot of newbie's biggest mistake.
so would anyone like to volunteer their time tested fat intake?
I personally focus on-
avocados
durian- my fav!!
raw olives
coconuts
flax seeds
I try not to eat a lot of nuts. They seem so dense, and the body doesn't assimilate them as easily as the aforementioned sources.
Raw food is supposed to be an enlightening journey but I think so many people are scared to climb on the fat wagon because of the conventional low-fat hype of years past and are missing out on a better experience. I, for one, love the fat wagon and just finished some delish olives and grapes while writing this.:D

I normally get between 6% and 8% of my calories from fat.
I have been raw for five and a half years and in the beginning my fat intake was much higher.

I think those who follow Alissa's plan get plenty of the good stuff - but those who come on these boards eating according to someone else's raw food ideals often do not.
Our bodies are different, but I know that I personally do much better on Alissa's plan - More veggies and fats, less fruit. I've always been sensitive to sugars/ higher glycemic foods, raw or not.
*** Edited to add:
That was my main problem when first going raw - I didn't add 1 +1. I was eating 100% raw but felt awful all the time - because I was eating so. much. fruit.
For me, I just can't do that. I need the lower glycemic foods for stable blood-sugar.
Bring on the fats! Home made coconut butter is my favorite!

The thing I wished I had never heard: I wish I had never heard the warning, "don't mix fruit with fat." I think it works for some people, but not me. As soon as I stopped worrying and ate what my body wanted (which was sometimes fruit + fat, sometimes not) I felt way better. I especially love bananas and almond butter.

Yep, me too. It keeps me from getting shaky, combining fat with fruit sometimes, other times I intuitive ly know that I don't need to. That's why I live dogma free.
By the way, my favorite fruit n fat combo is peaches and sesame tahini, yum!

I completely agree! It's true. Let go of the rules and eat what makes you, as an individual, feel good.
Having the fat with the fruit is what kept me from having blood sugar issues.

I am so fat, I don't need any more. At 253 lbs, I am trying to get rid of fat. I vow not to eat fatty foods for 2 months. The only fat exception is me consume a teaspoon of flaxseed oil in order to help my psoriasis and ezcema skin heal with the Omegas. Other than that, I am trying to release my blubber. You can have some of it if you want. :D

I'm so glad to see this post because I've seen so many people on here ask, "why am I not losing weight?" and everyone seems to jump on them to get off the avocados and the nuts.
Eat the fats!
Alissa's book will tell you that when she encounters someone who insists on eating meat that grams of protein in does not equal grams of protein utilized by the body, so why should grams of fat in equal grams of fat on your thighs? Hello, logic!
I always lost more weight when I ate an avocado every day. Maybe I'll have one for breakfast...

Peaches and sesame tahini! Sounds delicious! What's the recipe? Do you put them in a food processor together? Or do you just smear tahini on each peach slice? Oh, that sounds awesome!
About not eating fat: don't worry about whether you do or not is my advice. Your body will tell you what it wants. It sounds like you're being healthy by making sure you're giving yourself those omegas!

peaches + tahini is AMAZING with a bit of dried powdered ginger and maple syrup drizzled over the top

How is it going?
I thought you had to make sure and eat healthy fats to lose fat. I dropped 108 pounds while eating lots of healthy fats...avocados, coconuts, almond butter, Bariani's olive oil, etc. Sometimes I would eat as many as 4 avocados a day!

Well, I gained more weight on raw consuming lots of seed/fruit fats. Something made me gain the weight.
Besides, if I am obese, consumption of fat is the last thing my body needs. It has plenty of that stored up already. Why put in what needs to be taken out.

Avocados made me lose weight for a while but losing 5lbs and then stopping is nothing to brag about when I need to lose 100 lbs.
I just started a fast/detox and I am on day 4. I only consume flaxseed oil because I have skin issues that I want the Omegas to resolve. Yes, it is fat, but once my skin is great condition I will maybe eliminate this. But if I do decide to keep this, it will be the only fat I shall consume during my 2 month green-fruit smoothie challenge. The only fat I might use is virgin coconut, not because of its fat value, but because virgin coconut milk is high in potassium, since I don't like the taste of bananas in my smoothies. I rather deal with coconut milk. The fat in this case is just the added bonus.
Fat isn't bad if you are normal weight, but as an obese person, it is the last of one's concern in trying to consume. The idea is to try to eliminate what you got, not add on.

Again...
"I dropped 108 pounds while eating lots of healthy fats...avocados, coconuts, almond butter, Bariani's olive oil, etc."
Everything I have read and researched states that you won't lose fat unless you eat healthy fats. The body will refuse to let it go because the body DOES need fats. My experience proved that.
Good luck, though!
