Do you eat your Pomegranate seeds or spit them out? Just curious...

It's a personal preference, but I read you are to eat them. I do both, depending on how I feel.

I don't eat them. Just don't feel drawn to do so. I haven't even ever tried. :)

HUMMMM.... Very interesting...one yes and one no.... The reason I asked is because in the Salad I made yesterday it seems odd to me to spit them out when I eat it with the greens, pecans, and dressing... But, if felt odd eating them too... Since Google is my friend, I'll see what I can find on it...

Thx Ladies!!!

I did a search and came up with this (http://homecooking.about.com/od/cookingfaqs/f/faqpomeseeds.htm) article.

I was wonderin' the same thing just 2 weeks ago.

I have an old friend that eat poms ...seeds and all every season as if they're going out of style. I even mailed her some one time because she didn't have them in her area yet! She LOVES to eat the seeds so maybe it's a personal thing.

Isn't that all there is to a pomegranate....the seeds. I googled how to cut one and did it. The inside that the seeds are enveloped in has the texture of shipping peanuts....or just thick orange pith. Are you supposed to eat that white stuff? I didn't. Just ate the weird red seeds. The seeds had a nice tarty taste.

I eat the seeds - they're delicious.

It seems as the fruit ages and the skin gets harder, the inner white part of the seeds get drier and harder too. Young and fresh they are much softer to eat and more enjoyable. I've always eaten the whole seed unless on an old fruit, where I have at times spit out the collected harder parts, similar to when chewing whole pumpkin or sunflower seeds and then eliminating their shells.

Yea, I can see that... Some are definitely sweeter than others.

Yea, Gritsnla, it's just seeds... For the Juice, you need a hand juicer (for the salad dressing in Alissa's new book... I didn't have one, so I used my Garlic Press...yummy juice!!!!

I don't, but usually have the pomegranate as a juice. I put the seeds into a sieve and mush them down with a spoon to produce the juice. Then I use it or freeze it for later. Renee, the juice would be great in a salad dressing.

i noticed when i juiced them in my solostar (single auger slow turning) that the screening became covered with yummy thick creamy stuff, which when put in a smoothie made smoothies really creamy. same doesnt work from just putting the seeds in my smoothie though cos i dont have a high power blender. bet it would make a great creamy smoothie in a high power blender. i suspect that when the shells on the inner seeds are cracked, the inner seed is rich and creamy...but...i dont have time to crack pom seeds lol

ps: pom + blood orange juice is AMAZING

I bought a pomegranate when I was at the market the other day. It's a huge one. First time I'll ever have one fresh and raw. I've had prepackaged juice in past years.

I'm pretty excited.

I'm a seed eater, I never considered spitting them out, they aren't that noticable that they would be objectionable.

Mostly I eat them - it's no fun to spit them unless there's someone around to spit them at - like watermelon seeds :p (better to do this outside)

Renee -- you gotta get a citrus juicer - half pomegranate/half orange - OMG!

how do you do pom in a citrus juicer? maybe i have the wrong kind...i have an electric one... maybe you need one of those 2 part squeezie ones like a garlic press? pulling out my big juicer is a pain, and my blender makes crunchy smoothies with the pom seed shells unfortunately

ReneeH
11-28-2010, 04:52 PM
Yea, good question Kaybee!!! I do have a Garlic press and 2 citrus juicers... One you squeeze (lemon juicer) and one like an orange juicer that had a glass container to catch the juice. I wonder is it one of these?

ReneeH

Here are my juicers... Should I use one of these?

I do eat the seeds now but in the beginning, i wasn't.

I simply use a fine mesh strainer, will use a spoon and get the juice out. It works very well for me.

Ugh, I have never heard of not eating them. If you spit them out, seems like that would be most of what there is. So, I eat them. They seem to be messy enough without spitting the seeds out anyway. I guess I would juice them if I did not want the seeds.

Update: Okay thanks for this posting....I just went into the fridge to finish off the small chunk of pom. that I had left just to try not eating the seeds. Girl, I don't have that much time. LOL

Tulpa-
Some people just kind of bite the little juice pod and spit out the internal hard part of the seed.

Renee...come on down...they were at the military (Navy)commissary listed as juice poms...never heard of them billed that way....reg. size it seemed to me.have 5...need to get cracking and do something with them!

You should def eat them! ReneeH, the white juicer on the top right is the best, IMO.

Yrs ago, when researching hormones, I remember Dr. Jonathan Wright wrote that pomegranate contains/helps boost your estriol --a good estrogen.

Then I just ran upstairs and brought down a book by Robt. Young, who was extolling its virtues...sorry no time to look up a link, but I'll type in quickly what he says:

alkalizing low-sugar fruits rich in Vit C, E, B6 and other B vites.
good amt potassium, some copper, iron.

Juice is antiseptic and can be applied to cuts

anti-inflammatory

antioxidants and flavonoids

THE SEEDS ARE LOADED WITH OMEGA 5CLA oils, which neutralize acids.

Juice and oils help to build healthy red blood cells. good for high blood pressrue, heart disease, gout, obesity, and digestive stuff including diarrhea, cramps, flatulence.

Also good for getting rid of parasites but the active ingredient for that is an alkaloid called pelletierine, , and is only in the rind and membranes, which are edible. Also supplements.
************************

I juice them with a juicer like the white one, then take any remaining unjuiced seeds and mix with a little liquid in the Vita Mix on a low speed. Strain through a nutmilk bag, and then put the mostly crushed up seeds left in the nutmilk bag into dhe dehydrator. They taste better this way, and you can do other stuff with them this way....add a little salt, add to grawnolas, etc. that article said that Indian people would mix with meat to extend the meat dishes --I think it was that article posted earlier....

Well, that's my little dissertation....LOL

I only have a couple. Think I'll buy more.
