Hi Everyone,

I am having difficulty with my weight. I am naturally slender/low fat and since changing to a Vegan/Raw diet I lost what little extra weight I had. I am 6'4" and I weigh about 170. The weight is ok (a little low) but I look a bit too thin and I would like to put on about 10 Lbs of weight. Can anyone suggest foods to eat that will put some weight back on me?

Are you doing anything with weights? You can put on some good muscle with kettlebells or weight-bearing exercises. 170 @ 6'4" is a bit low imo.

Now mind you, I am fairly new to raw. I have heard little whispers about whether or not avocado is "kosher" raw or not. All I can say is it's natural.

I prefer Reed avocados. They don't have that same, sorta fishy taste as Haas. Reed's are incredible, especially when fresh and ripe.

A suggestion if you just want more calories is a dip made from these tasty babies with some flaxseed crackers. Add mangos, or tomatoes, and some celtic sea salt.

I'm looking for a good recipe..I made the Mediterranean style but I got a little bored with the flavor.

?? I don't understand this. An avocado is a natural raw food. Am I missing something?

Avocado is one hundred percent good and appropriate on the raw food diet. We are not fat-phobic in this community.

Are you eating raw nuts, seeds, and dried fruits? What is an average day's menu for you?

I've been eating mostly raw for a few years and also lost weight I didn't want to loose. The only thing I found that allows me to gain weight while eating raw is doing some weight lifting. It will naturally cause you to eat more and you will gain muscle mass.

I have the same problem. I've always been slim, but when I eat 100% raw I get too think. So I usually balance out my raw with some cooked food and that seems to work for me. I find it extremely difficult getting enough calories if I'm eating raw. I know it's possible, but for me it just seems a step to far. I feel great on 50-80% raw though. If I happen to go a day without eating anything raw (e.g. when travelling), I start to feel my energy diping and it's raw food that brings it back up.
I would say please do not give up on the raw diet because you get too skinny.
It is a temporary state while your body cleanses and after that you will have no problem maintaining your weight at the correct level.
When I went raw first my family thought that I was ill as I looked so skinny but now they all tell me how healthy I look.
I have no problem keeping my weight without any avocados and with very little added fat. All the added fat did for me was push my cholesterol sky high.

Plants do not contain cholesterol and plant fats lower cholesterol. Were you on a raw non vegan diet?

Absolutely not. I was an obsessive vegan long before I went raw. I will not even share cutlery with my husband as his would have touched cheese and butter. We have 2 cutlery drawers in our house.
I would never eat food (even vegan food) from a restaurant that served meat.
When I say that I was a vegan you can be sure that I was a vegan.

So where did you get the information that your cholesterol was high on a vegan diet? Only animal products contain cholesterol.

but fats of different kinds will raise your levels - don't have to be foods with cholesterol in them.

I know but I'm not aware of any plant based fat that increases cholesterol

I do have my bloods checked. I will be doing it again within the next couple of weeks and am expecting a major change as I have been low fat since last Feb.
I feel that you do not believe me so I would like to share my last 3 blood tests with you. I can scan them and send to you privately or put them on here for everyone to see.
The cholesterol is not the main reason that I check it. I have been showing high levels of an inflammation marker and I do not like that. I assume that it was due to osteoarthritis and now that I seem to have got rid of that I am interested to see if that goes down.
Another reason for me checking my bloods is because my husband's brother does it so it does not cost me anything.

My last 3 blood tests which would all have been in the last 3 years my cholesterol went from 6.2 to 6.9 to 7.5. Normal is considered to be 3.5 to 5.
You have difficulty getting life cover if you are over 5 unless you agree to take drugs.
I can honestly say that I do not know anyone with as high a level as me. I have been a very strict vegan for 10 years and have been veg for 36 years.

You are very incorrect when you say that you can not have high cholesterol on non animal fats as you see that mine has been steadily rising on nuts and avos and olive oil.

sport: That's strange but as you may know the cholesterol story is false, there's nothing wrong with cholesterol and it's a healthy and life essential nutrient. Studies show that it is people with low cholesterol that are at highest risk for heart attacks. The cholesterol story was only invented because they knew it would fool millions of people into buying a drug that actually increases their risk of death. Cholesterol drugs increase the risk of heart attack and cancer significantly.

robatcook1987: Creatine is not necessary and I beleive it is extracted from meat. Also, the only weight it can make you gain is from water retention.

Yes I agree. I have stated here before that my understanding is that homocysteine is far more important as a marker.

In a nutshell, your weight gaining diet should include high protein foods, high carbohydrate foods and healthy fats. Meal replacements provide a perfect, compact food to gain weight in a packet that is high in protein, low in fat, low in carbohydrates, and contain a wide array of vitamins and minerals.

This is a raw food website, please do not recommend artificial processed junk food.

You can get everything you need to gain weight with natural raw food, I've gained about 40 lbs and take no supplements or powders whatsoever.

I had a blood test last week and my cholesterol has gone from 7.5 to 4.8 (anything below 5 is considered normal) in the 2 years since my last test (well I think that it has happened in the one year that I have been low fat).
