View Full Version : I'm going to Oz. What to eat on the plane?

Hey Guys,
Next month I'm going to Australia (Oz) and I'm not sure what to eat on the plane. It will be my first time travelling whilst being raw. I was thinking of seeds but what else? It's going to be 16hr flight! I can't carry heavy bags of fruit, it's too much on my wrist (had an accident there) and also i'll be bothering the person next to me with my frequent trips to the loo!
Another thing, i'll be staying with my friend who has developed varicose on her legs. I've told her about raw food and she's very interested (thank god) and I was just wondering if any of you have healed varicose with raw food and if so please share your story.
Fanx guys!

Book an isle seat so you will not have to worry about disturbing the person next to you. You have to stay hydrated and the trips to the loo will keep your circulation going. My sister's husband died of a heart attack the day after returning from Thailand. He was a young man and had no history of heart trouble.

many people fast on planes... they say it makes jet lag non-existant.
i guess you'll just have to eat what they offer you cause as far as i know (from Renee's posts) you can't take stuff to eat on the plane.

I flew in October, and food was fine, but liquids weren't allowed to be brought through security. So I packed food (sandwiches - raw bread, avocado, spinach leaves, fruit, seeds, etc) and then just bought water at one of the little airport shops to take on the plane with me.
Check with your airline and see what's allowed as far as food - I flew in-state, so there were no restrictions on fruit or whatnot, but flying internationally might have different limitations.
Once you find out what you can and can't bring, we might have different ideas for you. :)

I booked a window seat because I need it (I don't have to explain why). It's not a direct flight so I will be moving.
I don't need to hear stories like that because
1. I'm not going to Thailand.
2. The death rate of people coming back from Thailand is very low.
3. Who knows what he was doing (or ate) in Thailand.
4. I travel all the time
Don't turn this post into a downer. I'm very excited about my trip and I just want advise on food and I'm sorry to hear about that young man.

Thanks! That's a good idea! I shall call them! I'm use to travelling from London but Los Angeles might be different? It's good to check. Thanks for that!

That's very interesting. I'm going to look into that. Thank you!

omg.. hahaha at first I was gonna say that is so cool! I love Dr oz..
Then I realized that it said just oz and not doctor oz lmao.
I would say bring a bag of trail mix.. with raisins and raw almonds and things like that. Then again, I'm not sure if that is even allowed to be brought on the plane. Maybe check with the airline.
Many times they will have vegetarian foods available though. I remember I went on a trip to fiji and they had a vegetarian version, which had like a fruit salad. I think just check with the airline and ask questions about what food is served, and if you could have them make a different meal for you.. (you never know, some small airlines are very customer oriented)

Eatrawordie,
I never got the feeling sport was trying to make this thread a "downer." Just thought she was giving some good advice and saying "Be careful. Long flights can be stressful."
And re bringing food on the plane: I haven't flown in quite some time, so don't know, but if you can bring food, how do you do it? Don't they xray everything you're carrying on? Can you keep your food "on your body" so that it's not put through the xray machine?

It's a 16 hour flight. I think I know it's going to be long and stressful? I'm already worried about my food hence this post. Threads are known to turn into other topics.
Last year I went back to London and I was allowed to take food on the plane. I wasn't allowed to take my water and deodorant. I'll definitely check again though. The fasting idea sounds good.

I'd go with fasting, the water that you can get on the plane, a tangerine or two in your bag, trail mix and maybe raw crackers/sandwiches and calling the airline ahead of time to ask for a vegan/gluten free meal (it's often the same meal for most special needs customers). It's not going to be delicious, but the vegan meals airlines offer are ok. Satisfies the immediate hunger.
Oh, and sleep. 16 hours and you'll be sleeping most of the time you're on the plane and you can usually get salads from airport cafes/restaurants.
I usually do stretches and butt clenches a few times an hour on the plane. Keeps the muscles working. :D

Haha good ole butt clenches! I do sketches too! Great time to sketch and I take photos of the clouds. I forgot about Tangerines! Thanks for reminding me!

Yes they do, and no you can't. You can't carry anything through with you - I'm actually surprised they let us keep clothes on. Shoes had to come off, as did jackets, sweaters, etc. We basically had to be down to one layer of clothes, and pockets and hands had to be empty.

Where did you travel to? When did you travel?

It was just an in-state flight, from eastern Washington to western Washington, as I said earlier, and it was about a month ago.

Yaaaaayyyyy! You're coming to my country!!!
Tell me which city and I'll try and hook you up with rawbies and places to eat/buy stuff etc. :D
How exciting, I love flying! I'd just check with what you can bring on the plane. Some airlines will let you bring stuff on, but fresh fruit and veg you will NOT be allowed to take with you into Aust as we have extremely tough quarantine regulations (we have delicious fruit and veg here, don't want to jeopardise it!).
So exciting! :D

Yeah, sorry bout that. You see, you're visiting the wrong city and state! :)
Melbourne is the shiz baby! We have a restaurant that has a raw food menu and a great raw community. We also have heaps of places where raw products are sold, and great fresh fruits and veg. :)
Sydney eh? You might want to try www.raw-pleasure.com.au for forum members who live in NSW. It's mostly QLDers there but some of them know stuff about Sydney. If you go to QLd, let me know as I also know raw places up there as well.
Also, I'll try and check and see if Gaia's Table is stil going, it's a raw meetup in Sydney. Try meetup.com.as well, one of the Melbourne social groups has a meetup profile there, type in 'Raw Food Melbourne'.

Yeah I started to get that impression. My friend moved out there. She got pregnant for some Aussie bloke. So i'm spending Christmas with them in Sydney.
Thanks for that info! I'm going to check it out!
A few peeps out here in Los Angeles have said that Melbourne is very similar to Venice beach i.e hippies, reggae music etc. Likely my friend is interested in Raw Foods so she'll be open to me uncooking but I'm sure there's still cool things to see and do in Sydney :)

Haha Venice Beach! Yeah, I can see the similarity between Some Melb places and there. Hehe.
If you visit here, you have to go to Yong Green Food in Brunswick St Fitzroy. There are many large health food stores that stock raw stuff, and a place right in the city that has a few raw takeaway items (mainly sweets) and lots of raw grocery products. And of course, we have fantastic markets like the Queen Victoria Market where fresh fruit and veg are great quality and really well priced.
And yep, there's plenty to see and do in Sydney, depending on what you like to do. :)

Cool cool! Thanks!! We should talk more via aim, skype or gmail if you have it?
I just found this place Earth Vegan Cafe (http://www.samadhiyoga.com.au/Earth_Vegan_Cafe.html) The prices are the same as LA so that's cool.

Hey, that cafe looks great! I'll keep that in mind when I'm up north!
And if you get to Queensland (one state up from NSW) go to this place!
http://fromearthandwater.com/
Also, look out for their raw ice creams in health food shops round NSW.
Some other raw brands to look out for include Living Foods (www.livingfoods.com.au), Loving Earth (www.lovingearth.com.au), Kitz (www.kitzlivingfoods.com.au), Raw Life! (www.rawlife.com.au) and heaps more!
And this great magazine will help you out too. :)

My flight over here was a seven hour flight. It was 2 adults, a 2 year old and a breast fed baby that I did not have to worry about. I was in charge of the food. My carry on bag was just all food and a couple of books.
I had a bag full of honeydew melons.
A bag full of chopped mango and papaya.
A bag full of peeled and chopped kiwi.
A bag of grapes
half a dozen Lara bars.
I also got lots of water at the airport to bring on board.
The only thing that security asked me about at check in was the little bottle of baking soda that I was carrying to use to rinse my mouth out after eating. The fruit did not worry them at all.

Thank you for the support. I think that as a result of my experience I am always afraid that people are not aware enough of the circulation and hydration aspects of a flight and I am constantly reminding them.
I will continue to do so and who knows, I may have saved a life already.

I have many long flights and have always been reminded at airports/flight attendants about these issues. It's nothing new. It's just up to those to take the advise.

Here's what I do when I fly:
1. I take a huge quart mason jar with me on the ride to the airport. I fill it with filtered water and drink it all down before I get to security. (They've never taken my empty jar, but they won't let you take liquids.)
2. I bring lots of fresh fruit and sometimes greens (on my last flight I was grazing on whole bunches of spinach leaves!.) I've never had these taken away, though sometimes they have run my bags through the X-ray machine more than once because they can't fathom what all those little round objects are!
3. I bring a bottle of Rhodiola Rosea tincture from Herb Pharm with me and take 2 dropperfuls for every 3 hours I'm in the air. Before boarding the plane I refill my Mason jar with water from a fountain or tap----no, it's not filtered, but I'd rather drink that water than water that's been in a plastic bottle and contaminated with xenoestrogens and BPA!
I never eat dehydrated foods on planes because they just draw even more water out of your body and lead to constipation. I save the dehydrated things for emergencies when I'm at my destination and don't have access to a kitchen or a grocery store.
My latest favorite thing is to bring a quart of strawberries with me on the plane. When everyone else is eating their nasty processed snacks, I pull out the strawberries which smell and taste amazing. I've gotten more than one jealous look and many compliments from flight attendents on my good idea!
(And you probably won't be able to bring fruit off the plane with you through customs, so only bring as much as you will eat on the flight.)
Have fun!
~Melanie

I would also remember to bring some chlorophyl or other such green powder. Just shake it up and you've got an easy way to get some green power...they give you energy, but I always sleep better after such drinks, too.
