View Full Version : What We Start Out With Often Becomes Something Else

I've tried several times now to make onion bread substituting 2 onions for the 2 1/2 lb. Also I wanted it kinda thick and soft so made rounds about 3 1/2" across and 1/4 in thick

The first attempt got half dry and hubby walked in and said "hamburgers" tasted one and pronounced them very good. So we had hamburgers with lettuce and tomatoes.

The second attempt, he came in while it was still in the bowl. Before he got in the kitchen he said "tuna, I smell tuna!" So we had tuna on cucumber slices.

That didn't use too much of it so I made the rest into bread which turned out to be "hamburgers" again when our daughter came over. I removed the stems from portabellas, filled them with chopped tomatoes and sweet onion, and toped that with the "hamburgers," which were once again half dried. She loved them and suggested that next time we put them over the guacamole stuffed portabellas. Have now had that several times. Magnificent!

The next attempt, at least one actually got dry. Hubby came in the bedroom with it before I got up and said it was the last and asked if I would get mad if he ate it. So I asked for half, which I set aside so I could eat some watermelon for breakfast. Then had to go run errands with my daughter.

Didn't want to leave my half home so stuck it in my shirt pocket. Later my daughter said "I'm hungry," we were in the middle of nowhere at the time. The only food in the car was my half a piece of onion bread/hamburger. We split it. Yes it was a well done flaxburger which is our new name for this food.

So I put some "flaxburger" in the dehydrator drying in little clumps for chili. It was sooo good, we used bean sized avocado pieces and a marinara sauce seasoned with chili powder, minced sweet onion, and banana pepper.

Have tried eggplant bacon and cannot for the life of me get it crisp. Dehydrated it 4 days and it was like thin limp paper. It was chewy and had a good flavor, but could not be broken or chewed in two. I chewed a piece 100 times, took it out of my mouth and it was still one piece. I intend in the future to grind the eggplant first and cut it into strips. Also to experiment with making chewing gum using eggplant as the base with some kind of mint as the flavor, or maybe cinnamon.

I now believe that is because of the extreme humidity here. I made some wonderful crisp potato chips they tasted similar to the SAD Pringles. An hour after taking them out of the dehydrator they were limp. They were still good though, kinda like thin sliced boiled potatoes seasoned with a hint of lemon and salt. Now we eat potato chips immediatly from the dehydrator.

Made some really great crackers from a cup of flax seed and an orange bell pepper that was trying to go bad. Made muffins from oats, apples, and raisins. Shaped them about 2” across and ½” high. They were good. Hubby loved them.

Any leftovers get turned into crackers or blenderized smooth and dried to leather for future reconstitution and use. Any fruit or veggie that is getting very ripe can be blenderized and dried to a leather or powder for future use in seasoning. Sometimes it doesn't last into the future, it becomes a great snack now.

Tried to make some tuna another time and didn't have sunflower seed so used pumpkin seed and hubby said it was just like the mackerel patties his mom used to make.

Still to this day haven't had anything that resembles onion bread, may need to add the right amount of onions.

Just some thoughts,

That's almost what happened with me and Alissa's meatloaf.

I made it by her recipe, and the meatloaf without dehydrating tasted like tuna, so I stuffed a tomato and ate some, then I wanted burger patties, so I made it into patties, and dehydarted it, it tastes wonderful

Then I made bar-b-que out of them by adding just a touch more sun dried tomatoes to the mix.

Then I made them into tacos, by adding a touch of chili powder and cumin to the mix, then I made them into taco salad, tostadas, pizza, raviolies, stuffed mushrooms with it and pesto, stuffed red pepper, un-dehydrated, and dehydrated, stuffed squash, added more sun dried tomatoes, and used it like sauce, etc.etc. etc.

Isn't it fantastic what you can do with one great recipe and some imagination?

I love RAW.

RP,

Tacos! Tacos, tacos, tacos! The flaxburger crumbles would be great in tacos; with tomatoes, minced sweet onions, raw sour cream (I have a recipe somewhere) and dehydrated cheddar cheese, shredded. OK, where to find untainted corn to make the shells?

And BBQ, hmmm ..... Something can be done in our house with that too.

You are an inspiration!

Teri S

Note - Raw nut cheddar cheese (recipe on this board) NOT the dairy kind.

Doe, that was a great post! I am just so happy for you that your dh and other family members love all your raw food, even if it does turn out to be something you hadn't intended it to be!

We had tacos last night....the kids LOVE this one. I make the shells from flax, sunflower seeds, cumin, salt and water.

Here it goes again. Made Carmel's veggie nuggets today. These are sooo good. I could have stuffed tomatoes with it without dehydrating. About 3 1/2 hours dehydrating hubby started eating the crab cakes and know what? He's right, that is what they taste like. He says we need a good Cajun dipping sauce if any actually get dehydrated. And I thought with such a big batch some surely would. Guess we'll see.
