because they are quite the staple in my diet. About four to six go into my morning green smoothie. How many are you eating? Can you drink a green smoothie without them? I'd miss the creaminess. Oh, that's four to six minimum a day......but my record is only twelve, which pales in comparison to some of the raw athletes nailing back thirty a day.

I rarely eat bananas and no, can't make/drink a smoozie without 'em.
Depends on the day... sometimes I think mmmmmmmmmmm naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaners and sometimes I think BLECH. Bananas. lol!
I do like them in my green smoothies, then I put about 1-2 frozen in there. And they're great with almond milk for milkshakes, same deal, 1-2 frozen in there...

I put them in my smoothies for the sweetness and the creaminess.
I may eat them for a quick snack or for breakfast if I don't have anything prepared.

Around 4 per day in green smoothie. Sometimes I sub in apples if I don't want to use so many bananas, but I don't leave them out altogether.

I'm very picky on bananas...if I just eat them alone they need to have just turned ripe (no brown spots)...i've started to add ripe ones that have been frozen to my smoothies, but i'm only to 1/2 a banana each time...
Stina, this just reminded me of when I was in Brazil last year. I got sooooo spoiled by the FRESH LOCAL SOOOO TASTY bananas that I couldn't eat the ones here for a bit. What a disappointment to come back to this.
They have many different kinds of bananas. The ones we see here in the USA are ones that are bred and built to travel well. They are NOT the most tasty!
Sigh. Just thinking of it makes me a bit sad that it's cold here and I'm not in some tropical paradise with fresh bananas. I could NEVER say no or "blech" to THOSE bananas. :)

I try not to eat too many of them because of the high sugar content. Every once in awhile I put them in smoothies for creaminess, but I prefer to use almond butter for that purpose.

I love, love, love bananas! I find them quite filling and I can't eat very many at one time. Three is usually enough for me. :)

I don't like bananas. *ducks tomatoes*
Actually it's the only fruit I don't like.
I'm a texture person and it's not so much the flavor but their texture I don't care for. I also put almond butter in my smoothies or a whole thai coconut for creaminess.

That's my main problem with them...the texture...the more ripe they get the more mushy/slimy they get...ick!

I'm fascinated with your name, it's so mystical sounding. Any background story to it that you can share?
I know what you mean though, four years ago I couldn't have imagined life without nuts now I hardly eat them at all.

That's my main problem with them...the texture...the more ripe they get the more mushy/slimy they get...ick! That's what makes them perfect for smoothies and other meals. When they have no brown on them, they're not ripe enough and you shouldn't eat them.

Four in a smoothie??? Ten in a day??? That is a lot of bananas. You all must lead very active lives. :)

Now I got bananas on my mind. I think I will make a version of Alissa's crepes where I just do a fruit medley rolled up in banana leather minus the nut cheese. But that recipe of hers is one of my all time favorites, outstanding to take to potlucks.

I don't like the texture either, that's why I prefer frozen bananas. I think that they are also sweeter when frozen.
uhmm... too much sugar and high glycemic?

Stina, They are very much a staple in my daily diet as well..always use one per serving of green smoothie..and then I eat at least two for snack and maybe 2-3 more around lunch..I have read up on fruit consumption and feel I am on the right track..more fruit carbs consumed makes for lesser fat consumption..trying to stay away from to many nuts and/or avocados. So far me eating 6-10 a day have not casued me any problems.
I also prefer mine right on the left side of ripe..i.e rather underripe then too much..can't stand when they are mushy or too sweet.

I have been increasing my fruit consumption, making fruit my main calorie source.
So.. 3-4 in a HUGE all-fruit smoothie, plus another 2-3 to eat as is. (plus all the rest of the fruit I eat throughout the day)

I've also developed a funny habit of eating bananas as I drink my green smoothies quite often. It satisfies my need tho chew and I figure it stimulates my gastric juices. That's even more bananas! I buy GROW bananas that is an organization committed to good business principles and treat the workers well.

I probably use 2-4 frozen bananas in my smoothies (both green & cacao)...but sometimes I use other fruit instead....always blueberries, but in place of the bananas I use frozen papaya....it adds a silky smoothness...recently in addition to blueberries I've been adding a combination of papaya, mango & pineapple...delicious! Don't miss the bananas at all in this one.

How much do I love bananas? Enough to walk to several different stores to find that elusive discount, and still ending up buying bananas in most every store I visit. Walked to two today and bought bananas from both, though only one had a discount. :D
Sadly I wish I could afford the good kind. These are cheap, non-organic kind so I don't like eating them as is. They don't taste very good. Gimme some organic fair trade bananas any day over these.
Very strange... just wrapping up a short fast/feast... and bananas are grossing me out right now although I want to want them for my green smoothies. Bizarre!

Maybe your palate is just asking for crisper tastes? I like making my green smoothies with pears and apples. Makes them very fresh tasting.

Yeah we have these strange non organic bananas at my job that rot from the inside out and don't taste nearly as good. This is the crap they feed senior citizens. I eat them when I'm desperate.

we buy organic bananas by the case ($32 CAD/40 lb), plus i always stock up on reduced non-organic bananas whenver i can get them. they're defintely a staple in our house. we eat them as is, drink lots of smoothies (usually just bananas and greens and water), make banana ice cream and make banana flatbread. i try to get in lots of fruit calories so i don't eat too much fat. still make recipes though, when i'm looking for a treat! i'd say i eat around ten a day on average, sometimes more, sometimes less.

I buy so many bananas that I always get asked at the stores what am I doing with so many. Um, eating them. They always assume I'm making banana bread. Usually I'll then talk about green smoothies or raw. Bananas, a great conversation starter. :p

I read too much sugar ages the skin, and that has been my concern about eating many bananas, which I love. May I ask how eating so many bananas has affected your skin--if you have consumed so many bananas for a long enough period?

I am 58 and have very little wrinkles and I consider bananas to be my staple food.
The girl at the checkout at whole foods yesterday commented on how good my skin was. She asked if I was vegan (seeing what I was buying) and I said that I was raw and she made that comment.
I have not put moisturiser on my face for years and only recently started to put a little olive oil.

I dunno where these things get started...
I've noticed from personal experience, that lots of items with refined white sugar can deepen my frown wrinkles. But more than those eating items that have lots of caffeine and dairy (or the worst offenders: items that have all three) will make them so much worse than just the sugar.
I suppose it's a never ending battle to try to get people to understand that refined sugar isn't the same thing as natural sugars occurring in food just as body fat and dietary fat are not the same thing.

When I was a little girl, I didn't like bananas. Now, that I make Green Smoothies daily, banana is usually one of the ingredients.
When I don't use a banana, I use an avocado which adds a silky, smooth and sophisticated flavor and texture to the smoothie.

A mostly raw diet high in greens and fruit and no coffee dairy or processed sugar or gluten leaves my skin clear and vibrant with really minimal wrinkles for a thirty eight year old. A few times I dove headfirst off this diet into junk left me really haggard looking.

Will raw kefir or raw milk mess up one's skin? I have read good reports about raw milk/kefir.

I asked that question because in this thread a number of people mentioned that consuming dairy was not good for their skin. Thanks for answering anyway.
when I first went raw in august they were my fruit of choice so I ate them 5-6 a day, then something happened; what you ask? I discovered that eating banana's help my monthly cycle not be so intense (cramps stopped completely, tiredness-for some reason that is a symptom for me now went away) we had some issues with the fruit dept at the local store so I have been without my nanners for about 2 wks just got two big bunches. dd is eating them with me when I told her the benefits of helping with the cycles. I don't really care for them in smoothies, or other blended items. I just prefer to peel n eat.

Me too. When I was a SAD eater, I used to only like eating overly ripe (blotchy brown) bananas. When I started eating raw and eating them by their lonesome, I only enjoy the taste of just under ripe (slight green tinge to the tips). Much better for chewing. Not so mushy. But in smoothies, I will eat them very ripe. Before they turn completely brown, however, I will freeze them. Yum yum.

It varies, but rarely one. I can go for days without ... but if I start in, I'll easily have 3 or more. I find that when I eat them I also want other sugary foods.
BTW, I prefer mango as my standard base fruit in green smoothies, but I can't get them out of season, whereas bananas are always available.

I don't have a backround story to my name. I wish I had a cool tidbit as to how I picked this username but really I'm just a mythology/history nerd. In this case it would be Norse mythology.
