View Full Version : Pumpkin Seed Sprouts
Hi raw friends :)
I have a pumpkin and was wondering if I could take the raw unhulled (with shell) seeds, plant them in soil until they sprout and then eat them?
I've never heard of this before so I thought I'd ask.
Thanks!

why would you plant them in soil instead of just sprouting them like you would other seeds?
but ya... they would be edible. ;)

i prefer to dehydrate mine... after soaking them in salt overnight. mmmmmm crunchy yummy goodness!
Thanks! I'm going to grow some then *excited* I haven't ever read about them before which is weird. I guess technically they would be called pumpkin seed greens.
I want them to grow relatively big and green, be rooted properly, and offer more nutrition--that's why I'm growing them in soil.

actually it's the opposite. when eating things that are sprouted theres more enzymes in the newly sprouted seed because all the energy is still in the seed rather than expended to grow the shoot!

Cool, thanks for the tip! I'll have to do a little of each..the greens may have less enzymes, but certainly aren't lacking in nutrients!

nope they aren't... but all those nutrients are in the sprouts. cause the nutrients come from the seed...
Perhaps it's just me - but I've never been able to get pumpkin seeds to sprout... (?) I soak them overnight and then dehydrate them for my staple stash and call it good.
Have you been able to actually get them to sprout? I'm using hulled seeds though - perhaps that makes a difference? *Ü*

me? i'm not a sprouter although i hope to be one day LOL
Ahh - I just looked it up here (http://www.sproutpeople.com/seed/pumpkin.html) (Sprout People) and it explains that these do not "sprout". They're referred to as 'soaks' -- it goes into nice detail.
Now - I'm not sure about pumpkin greens though, personally I've never heard or read about growing pumpkin greens. Not that that means anything! ;)
If you'd like to grow greens in dirt, perhaps you'd enjoy sunflower greens. These are fun to grow and taste fantastic! I grew sunflowers this summer and have harvested their seeds to try them out for greens. I bought last years seeds from The Sprout Man and they were excellent, I would have wonderful yields.
