hello,

I have just sprouted some organic chikpeas and probably left it soaking a little too long (overnight and part of day) and may not have let the chikpeas dry enough or give enough air circulation when sprouting.

Anyway the sprouts have grown on most of the chikpeas put they STINK!
There was 'starchy goo' on the bottom and they smell gross.

I know I have not followed the rules for sprouting correctly, but will they be ok to use.

I have rinsed repeatedly now and they taste fine, but still slight smell remains.

I know there is a lot of info on the internet regarding smelly chikpeas but none of the info/post state whether it is still ok to eat them or best to start again!?

Thanks Heaps!

It depends. If it smells it has some mold on it. I have had a batch like this before. But when I do it now it does not smell. I always make sure to rinse well several times a day for them to sprout. Do they have any brown/black color on any if them? Any fuzz growing on them? If they do, toss them.

personally, id chuck em and start again. you should try to let them sprout either in a sprouting bag or in a jar with netting on the top turned upside down so that they arent sitting in any water in the bottom of the jar. ive neglected and had to chuck sprouts a billion times. its a waste, but if some of the icky smell still remains, id chuck.

Have you tried vitamin C powder? Adding 1/4 tsp per pint of soaking water is supposed to kill most molds.

That is an excellent tip!

You soaked them for too long is all, six hours is good, you can get away with eight hours. Anymore and they get funky.
I can't eat raw uncooked legumes, too hard on my stomach, except for mungs, they are soft enough for me.

I soak the chickpeas overnight, then rinse and sprout for a day and a half. No problem with that length of time....after that, they start smelling.
