So I'm pretty sure I have beeturia.
For those of you who don't know it is a condition that causes urine and bowel movements to appear red. It affects 10-14% of the adult population and looks like it is related to iron absorption. I've even read that individuals who have it have higher levels of oxalic acid in their intestines. I introduced juiced beets into my diet about a week ago and started noticing my urine turning red. This actually scared me a bit because I had never seen that kind of color in my pee before...

Does anyone know anything else about this? Any suggestions?

Actually, several raw foodists have told me their poop changes color. If you eat a yellow bell pepper, poop turns yellow. Nothing to be worried about, IMO. I get the same thing after beet juice!

ahh, well that's good to hear. Maybe some digestive enzymes could help?

Um... why the extra digestive enzymes? The colour change isn't harmfull in any way, it's just what food items with strong colours do to you. Beets mostly though. Beetroot is commonly used for dyeing processed foods (meats, candy, juices) and even fabrics, the colour is that strong.
You want to flush it out of your system quicker? Drink loads of water.

My urine/feces turns reddish every time I have beets.

If you never noticed red in your pee before....and you just started drinking beet juice...10 to 1 it's the beets. It makes everything red for me no matter what diet I am eating.

Here's a test - take the beet juice out of your diet and note if you have any changes in color. If you're back to normal, you have your answer :)

ps - I am not an md, nd, do, or homeo..... just adding my two cents! :)

It will normalize, this is tottally normal. Eat green smoothie. When we are low in chlorophyle, the color get red if we eat beet, but get normal once we are in balance with the chlorophyle.

I had that and i am now normal.

I am not a doctor and you need to do your own research

Happens with me too! And I second the drink more water thing. Don't waste your money on enzyme stuff, just get natural enzymes from rawness.

P.S. Beeturia sounds a good thing doesn't it? Like a wonderland filled with beets. Did you ever watch that animated tv show, Doug? And there was that band called the Beets? I bet they would sing a song about Beeturia. Okay, this is totally off target, sorry it's been a long week.

this is actually considered a condition? and I can't believe it's only 10 -14%. This happens to everyone I know lol. beets are pretty intense in color.. people use them to dye fabric even :). I use it for lipstick sometimes as well

I love beets and yes it turns everything a pretty pink color in my body as well. I like it, sure beats the other colors..in my humble opinion. :)

LOL I feel dumb...

I guess I have to learn somehow though. I just never experienced red urine before, or poop.
